Team List Rnd 18 Pre-Match Thread vs North Melbourne at SCG 1:45 PM Saturday 13 July 2024

I know this was posted already in the Saints match thread, but it seems like a good way to start the pre-match thread for the upcoming North game.

    Mills AFL return confirmed

Who goes out, regardless of the Heeney situation? Worryingly I see North as a chance if the Swans team from the Saints game turns up.

This will show whether we’re really in a slump or just in need of a mental/physical refresher. Great to have Millsy back but of course he lacks match fitness. Shame to lose Isaac to such an innocuous incident- we’ve all seen a lot worse. I guess Adams will also come in but we need a bit more speed. I’m afraid Wicks and Amartey should go but I suspect Amartey will get 1 more chance in front of a home crowd, and as Grundy needs a bit more help from McLean , this may also save Joel. Is McAndrews a chance? He’s been emergency once or twice.

So glad that the king is back. His touch might be a bit off for a game or two, but some of the conversation on here earlier this year forgot just what an elite talent Mills is. He's arguably the best two-way midfielder in the AFL, a total brute around the ball and an onfield coach. Total top tier and can't wait to see him build for September.

I've helped ou cause by having a bet of Norf at $8.50! for the win, had a saver on my total stake taking the $1.90 on Norf at 45.5 points in. These odds seem very generous given both teams recent form and the fact we've struggled against Norf in past few seasons even when they were crap.

After the last two results left me 'depressed', I'm quite happy to lose both these bets if we win handsomely, or escape with money back if we win a tighter one.

Like last week, a danger game Liz :-)

Our form against North Melbourne hasn't been great, as we weren't handing out spankings when North Melbourne were awful. For some of that time we weren't that great either, as that time included the 2019 and 2020 seasons where we finished 15th and 16th. At least we've been getting wins against them. We've won our last seven against them, margins 3, 38, 11, 14, 11, 5 and 6 points. We've won 17 out of the last 20 games against them.

Our last loss against them was round 7, 2018 by 2 points at the SCG. At the time we were 7th and 4-2, and North were 8th with 3-3. North Melbourne finished ninth that year and we finished 6th before losing an elimination final to GWS.

Ludwig said we will lose by 60 a bit tongue in cheek, but a third loss for us in a row is a real possibility.

North have improved a lot and we are not playing the same football as earlier in the year.

Plus Heeney out is a big change to our midfield chemistry and connection.

Their ruck is Xerri is having a very good patch and Grundy will need some help.

They will be absolutely full of belief that they can beat us, given St Kilda did.

Hopefully our goal kicking isn’t as poor as last week. Even though we weren’t on top of our game generally, the kicking for goal was truly poor and cost us the match. Should have been 50 points up 10 minutes into the third quarter.

Parker Emergency so he’s the cover if Heeney appeal fails

Really, really disappointed in the Club and selection committee for not picking Parker... yes, he may come in for Heeney (or Wicks might get a reprieve), but he shouldn't even have to go through that process anyway... he is a better option than Adams, Roberts, maybe even Campbell and Fox too, if you don't just select for a particular position (half back). I can't believe how they are treating a champion of the club...

I don't think Wicks' last two weeks have been his best, but I'm curious about that defensive/pressure forward role. From memory, Fox trained there a bit preseason and played there in the practice matches and first round or two, so he will possibly return to it.

Probably forgotten since it was early in the season as well as the drama with Wicks and unknown teammate but he started the first two games of the year as sub and only came into the team when Fox was injured taking that defensive forward role

Surely Mills ain't Sub ? Start him and sub him early if we can

Campbell or Adams will be sub

Like what Roberts can be but prefer the 5 on the bench atm
