AFL gets tough on faked injuries

In the wake of Luke Darcy's admission he faked an injury in order to receive a free kick, the AFL has announced it will crack down on players staging during games.

"We can't have player pretending to be hurt when they're not," said an angry AFL supremo Andrew Demetriou. "This is footy, not soccer, after all."

Demetriou said all injured players would now be required to provide a note to the AFL explaining whether the injury was genuine or not. "This note should be supplied by a doctor but, failing that, we will accept a note from the player's mum."

Demetriou said he had already received a note from Matthew Lloyd's mother saying that Lloyd genuinely did deserve a free during Essendon's weekend match against Collingwood.

However, Demetriou said he had some concerns over the validity of the note.

"My boy, Matty," the note read. "Got a nasty knock to the head at the weekend by one of those rough Collingwood boys. He had a bump and everything, so he really did need to roll around on the ground for a number of minutes before getting up and kicking that goal from around the centre circle."

"The handwriting is very similar to Matthew's," said Demetriou. "And it's also signed 'mum', which makes me wonder whether it really did come from Mrs Lloyd."
