If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Is it too early to say the Saints have lost the plot?

Lets face it - one CAN be early ripe!

Yes - they are still a team stacked with quality players, though it has become apparent in the last fortnight how important a firing Gehrig is to their forward structure.

I think what these two games do raise, though, is the match day coaching of Thomas - again. He had been lauded as suddenly being a great coach while they were thrashing everyone. But coaching is easy when your players are doing it all for you. We're in no position to question his people motivation skills but he doesn't seem to have - at least yet - any tricks up his sleeve on match day.

The Saints may still have lost one of both these games had Thomas tried anything different but surely he should at least have tried something? His reluctance to react to what is going on and instead stick by his pre-game plan suggests that he thinks that if he has the best players, premierships will automatically follow. His comment in the off-season about how many premierships his squad would win in the next five or so years also suggests this. The obvious example from yesterday was his refusal to get Hayes onto the ground at any point in the first quarter, despite the fact that the Dogs' midfield was on top.

This happens to a lot of young, inexperienced teams. Win many in the first half of the season only to tire and fall back to the pack throughout the 2nd, more important, half of the season.

Didnt Geelong do something similar a few years back? Win about 8 on the trot to start the season and then miss out on the finals? Dont quote me on this, you know how bad my memory can be.
