Interesting that this issue was just brought up On the Couch - they all seemed to agree that its not just about the Roos playing there, but about promoting the game, and if the AFL is serious about promoting the game in centres without a team, they need to have some of the bigger name clubs playing, even if it means smaller gate receipts.
I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Meaning Sydney are stuck there for the amount of time the ACT government is willing to throw money at it.
We are the AFL's and the ACT's saving grace we ensure a big crowd, and our supporters bring a few thousand tourists down there, justifying the ACT governments decision.

Yes, exactly.
This is where the AFL is opening themselves up for exploitation in their NSW FIRST ideology.
They are so enthusiastic abut putting matches in NSW that they don't seem to realise the damage that hard-hearted efforts like North's are doing to the game's credibility.
They've stuffed it in Sydney and are unloved in Canberra (but without any promotion etc etc can you blame the Canberra public for not accepting them? )

unfortunately there are things we must face as supporters of the great code of Aussie Rules. One of those things is that Collingwood draws crowds. For some reason they have people everywhere who follow them.
Being that a lot of people in the ACT have moved there due to their work committments, I think they'd draw a crowd with Collingwood as they did with Sydney.
To play teams outside of the "traditional" (old VFL) ones really isn't going to draw crowds.
The problem the Kangas face is, they want to establish a supporter base there, not just have the visiting teams supporters come out of the woodwork.
I think Canberians will get behind them only if they leave Melbourne and become a team who are based there. Toing and Froing is not helping their cause or growing the code. It's only providing a match for those already fans of the game to go to.

JS - I don't like our games being used to gloss over what is an unjustifiable waste of time. The Canberra market is simply not big enough for AFL football - this 'game development' stuff is nonsense, and they know it.
It's time they started being honest. Call it what it is - a short-term grab for short-term cash.
