Funny, first Eade ruins the game with the flood now Roos ruins it with his "keepings off" footy.

If only the rest of the league could keep up with us here at the Swans....

I agree with Healy's concerns about the direction of the game.

One possible idea is to require teams to have at least two players in each part of the field at a time. These 'parts' would be the F50, D50, forward midfield (between centre line and F50) and defensive midfield. This leaves only 10 players spare that can crowd up one area.

I also think some of the ideas from the Wizard Cup should be brought in:

      - no mark if the ball is kicked backwards, and
      - ball thrown in from the boundary line a further 10m in.
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

"[T]here are things that matter more and he's reading and thinking about them: heaven, reincarnation. Life and death are the only things that are truly a matter of life and death. Not football."

This kind of issue has been addressed in many sports and rules are occasionally introduced to try and change things. Examples include the 24 second shot clock in basketball, the 10m rule in rugby league and the back pass rule in soccer.

There is no dobut AFL footy has a problem with game aesthetics at the moment and a few minor tweaks could help. The kicking backwards rule is one, although I'd restrict it to kicks within or into your own defensive 50. A couple of other easy ones:-
-Get umpires to be stricter on the 15m for short passes, or increase it to 20.
-Speed up the time taken to ball it up at clearances. Look at old games on Fox Footy and you'll see the umpires just pick it up and bounce it without all the posturing and delays.
-Give players a much shorter amount of time to dispose a ball after they mark it
Today's a draft of your epitaph

          Especially when going for goal.

Those tweaks are more aimed at punishing the team in posession which is a bit unfair imo.Kicking backwards is only a problem when it is used to wind down the clock. In many cases it is used to switch play and open up the play.Short kicks are used to retain posession when all other options are closed down.Forcing the team in posession to kick it to more risky options is not fair.
The problems stem not from the team in posession but the defensive tactics of the opposition so to open the game up more emphasis should be given to curbing the tactics of the team not in posession.
Evolution might take care of this as strong marking players will have to be developed as they are the ones that break open games when it becomes cluttered.Brisbane just belt it forward at all times knowing that Brown and Lynch and a few others have the one on one skills to beat their opponents.Quick long kicks even if not pinpoint can break up the congestion by clearing the roaming pack.Maybe strong marking ruckman will make a reappearance. The likes of Dempsey and Round would be invaluable in todays game as they could take pack marks which you don't often see from ruckmen these days.
