What a coincidence! Since the weekend both Carlton and Essendon have been the most vocal opponents of salary cap relief given to the Swans and Lions. Also to note that Carlton have been the biggest salary cap cheats over the years and that Essendon are currently under investigation regarding payments to Hird and Lloyd. (See The Age today)
Carlton joins calls for end to concessions

Carlton has joined the posse of southern states clubs seeking the elimination of salary cap concessions for the Brisbane Lions and Sydney.
Carlton president Ian Collins said on Monday night that he saw no reason why the concessions should remain and reminded those at the club's annual meeting of his attempt to phase out allowances in his time as AFL football operations manager.
Collins also claimed that there was not one dissenting voice among the 14 clubs from the traditional football states.
The AFL has already told the clubs that it will table a revised concession scheme by the middle of the year.
At present, Brisbane is afforded a 10 per cent cap allowance worth $600,000 for the retention of players and Sydney a 15 per cent allowance of $900,000 for the dual purpose of retaining players and to offset the cost of living in the NSW capital.
"I don't see why the extra payments or allowances to Sydney and Brisbane should remain," Collins said. "As you probably know, when I was at the league we tried to eliminate them over a period of time and it got down to a stage where it got down to a $100,000 benefit and then all of a sudden they felt sorry for Brisbane and it ended up going the other way."
Collingwood and Essendon have been the most strident critics of the concessions although the Magpies, unlike the Dons or Carlton, are not proposing that all aid to the Lions and Swans be removed.
Collingwood president Eddie McGuire has been arguing first for a distinction to be made between the type of help required by Sydney and Brisbane on the basis that the two clubs operate in different markets.
Money provided to the Lions, he has said, should be channelled into development of the code rather than the team and in Sydney the cost of living allowance should be spread across the entire playing list to ensure the money is not used to recruit players or pay players above the market rate.
Port Adelaide chairman Greg Boulton has also proposed something similar.
