    Death of arvo finals

The AFL has all but sounded the death knell for afternoon finals after deciding to play both semi finals and preliminary finals at night. I am a traditionalist and would have preferred at least one final on each weekend to be during the daytime.
I believe it won?t be long before the AFL gives in to commercial pressures and plays the grand final at night.
The next broadcast deal could be the nail in the coffin as 9 won?t pass up on finals this time around and will push for a night grand final as they did in league.
The only good thing about night finals is that I can play cricket and not miss the footy!

I don't really like night football - I think the game looks better in the daylight.

I would hate to see a grand final played at night, would be an absolute disgrace.

Nine will NOT get the finals unless the relinquish the NRL rights. How can they show both in prime time? The AFL is NOT stupid. Self-centred maybe but NOT stupid.

What the AFL should now be doing is telling TEN "Ok, you've got your night finals that you wanted. Now show them live EVERYWHERE!!"

From the TV schedule we won't (in Sydney) get the Cats final till 22:45 on Sat night. The schedule for the Brissy final has not yet been announced. If it's not live (or close to it) I'll be seriously ****ed!

If they want primetime in Melbourne then they have to give primetime in Sydney as well - "give and take"

Wouldn't like a night grand final.

Hate to end up like Rugby League and kill off every shred of tradition one by one. October night Grand Final anyone?

Totally agree. I've got no problem with playing finals, even the grand final, at night, as long as they can be televised live in Sydney. But to expect people to stay up till 2am to watch a final is totally unreasonable.

other than "tradition", what would actually be wrong with a night grand final?

I hate the idea of playing the GF at night. I don't think that it's enough to dismiss "tradition". Tradition is very important. What may prevent the GF being played at night is the time difference in WA.

Well, there's being able to have kids watch it for one. There's also the fact that the standard of play is almost always better in the daytime as you don't have dew, lights and the like to contend with. There's the fact that lots of people have GF BBQs and picnics with friends and families.

There's also one other thing, which is kind of all-encompassing, and that's TRADITION. Tradition is extremely important because it means something to so many people. It's one reason why the AFL has it all over the NRL. They know when to move forward and when to respect tradition (generally).

tradition dont mean **** when theres a buck to be made.

pardon me for thinking, but in the AFL (well VFL, whose kidding ourselves here) there are 22 rounds because there were originally 12 teams and it all worked out that each team played each other twice.

well, hang on, it was 18 rounds once wasnt it?

there is a long tradition of this league changing things, moving with time, yada yada.

who knows one day the GF may be played out of melbourne, maybe at night even.

                        im all for it!

                        cheers
