    Reg Regan- An AFL Parody?

A topic of great discussion at the Newcastle Junior AFL planning day for 2005 was the peer pressure in the area AGAINST playing Aussie Rules for junior high school students. Some of the clubs were indicating that player numbers may be down in 2005 due to the peer pressure exerted to participate in the "tougher" code of Rugby League. (for those un initiated with Newcastle, it is seen as the spiritual home of Rugby League and if you dont play League or you are seen to be actively support the Knights :shudder: you are looked at strangely as if you are somewhat lacking in the cranial department)

One of the issues raised was, strangely enough, Reg Regan, Matthew Johns' alter ego on the NRL Footy (sic) Show.

The suggestion raised was that Reg Regan was in-fact created as a parody of "Dipper" (i'm not going to try and spell his name) in an attempt by the NRL to halt the groundswell of support for the Swans Specifically, the AFL in general and the increase in participation of young New South Welshmen playing the National Code.

What do the users of this forum think of the suggestion? Are the NRL running scared of the AFL & Auskick or was this suggestion born of an over zealous imagination??

Reg Regan is a parody of the rugby leagues players of the seventies and early eighties. Most of the players back then had a yobbo image, the players in league have more of a clean cut image nowadays(with the expection of a few)The only yobbos in the game are the ones on the hill or in the grandstand(like me )The whole"bring back the biff" gimmick is a reflection of the rough style, rugby league was played.Much rougher than now.Plus the whole putting on a 'stink' thing that went on in rugby league then.Yes,Reg does look like Dipper but he also looks like David Boon too.
Well done Craig Bolton for getting the co- captaincy in 2008.

Your determination, your tenacity and your under-rated skill is why you have become my favourite player!

Reg Reagan was created to appeal to the type of working class bogans from New Lambton and Booroogul than watching not only the NRL Footy Show but rugby league in general. I swear, go to a Newcastle Knights match and look at how many people look as those they have just escaped from the darkest depths of a hidden mountain cave or solitary confinement. You can't even buy spirits on the Enema Australia hill. Just beer beer and more bloody beer.

Maybe the Swans need a Country Road-wearing Paddington Shiraz sipper to appeal to their target market. One Cyril de Champagne kashmir sweater for me please. And make the brand name really really big, won't you darlink...

Sounds just like the RL equivalent of Port fans!

*tongue planted firmly in cheek, with no offence meant to our Port-supporting friends on this board*

              I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

Nah, bikie types who follow Port are happy enough to donate chicken wings and sausages from their BBQs to travelling fans.

Newcastle Knights supporters would NEVER be so generous.

ive been born and bred in Blacktown, smack bang in the biggest rugby league (spirtual, statistically) area in the world, between Penriff and Parra and like previously mentioned, its having a dip at the "old school" leaguies, stubby surgically placed in hand, gut out of shirt, thongs and footy shorts that make VFL shorts in the 70s look like knickerbockers, yelling abuse at all and sundry.i watched a game between Blacktown City and Doonside(rugby league)and if you placed all mullets end-to-end it would stretch around the world!dead set bogan city, very culturally funny to watch.but if i had to, i'd back Dipper over that nuffy.

Reg is supposedly based an unknown league player from Newcastle back in the 1970's. They're fanatic to the point of absurdity about league up in Newcastle so there's probably some truth in all that.

I think that Reg Reagan is a blatant rip-off of Warwick Todd, but nowhere near as amusing or clever. But good luck to Johns, it's earning him a mint.
