I think there's got to be a guarantee on the Friday/Saturday Nights coverage for the Northern States as a key to any negotiation.

Any Friday night game was not shown until 11pm or later on 9 (NBN for me) and was put off until 6am the next day when Wimbledon etc was on the box.
Then the only time the Saturday Night footy was on at a decent hour was when our boys were on. (Thank christ the Shaft put fox footy on for us!)

That being said, I think 9 going it alone would be disasterous for the Northern States, as the Friday Coverage would not exist and Saturday Nights would not be seen for a proportion of the year. (then look out when the 2 codes finals were on!)

I think 7/10 with fox in that case would end up being the best option, provided we could get the friday night games on no later than a 930 start and no later than an 830 start on a Saturday (with all swans away games live!!)

      perhaps i'm asking too much????

I hate 9. If the others could get Dennis Cometti and go back to the 7.30 start on Friday nights all would be great. I tried that driving to the MCG caper too. It's right, petrol and water don't mix, so why do they shove that 8.30 start stuff down our necks. I know Tassie is seen as a suburb of Melbourne but it is a suburb with a long Aussie rules history (thus biggish market) and a big stretch of water to negotiate to get to the town centre.
I appreciate that the northern viewers have more to grizzle about than I but hey I just felt like getting that off my chest.

Would prefer Fox to keep the pay TV rights - it is the only reason I subscribe to Fox. They seem to do a pretty decent job of it and are now the only channel who present any decent discussion / analysis programmes.
          i agree with you liz.

With Eddie commenting last night during the match how this was so good a replay and that was a good camera angle because it is Channel 9 - can't wait to get rid of Eddie and Channel 9 - 1st game of the season and what do we get 9.30 Sydney time on Pay TV - lousy Eddie didn't even wake up to that fact no show on free TV in Sydney.

Get real Eddie - you are a drop kick.

Yeah I heard that too - what a loser, his nose is so out of joint because if 9 lose their coverage, thats a little bit of Eddie power that diminishes.

I hope that the 10/7 consortium gets up.

Not fused on Quartermain or Anthony Hudson though (in fact they both drive me to drink) but I doo like Cometti and always did like Sandy Roberts.
I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure..................

Ch 7 seemed to spit the dummy when they lost the rights. Years ago they weren't too bad. We used to get Talking Footy (Mon then Tues night). a Thursday night footy show and a Sunday morning footy show with Rexy and the boys following Sportsworld. That was also at the time that Plugger had a huge profile in Sydney and CH 7 seemed to be putting in some effort.
Recently, there was even talk that they were going to can Tim Watson's Talking Footy (Tuesday nights during the home and away). I rang to lodge a complaint about this a couple of months ago: it's probably one of the few shows on FTA that has a serious look at AFL with plenty of talk time and footage from their 45 year archive. I hope CH 7 reconsider now that they're throwing their hat back in the ring. One danger of CH 7 showing improved ratings is that it will continue to worry about things that don't rate well and they must still have this perception that the AFL doesn't rate all that well in the northern States. That ratings god has a lot to answer for.
All things considered, I think we'd be far better off with a 7-10 consortium than 9-10. That way 9 can show RL to its heart's content and I'll never have to watch 9 again (except for US Masters golf!!!).
I heard Eddie mention last night that Andrew Demetriou had been interviewed on Melbourne Radio and there was a suggestion that if they (the AFL) didn't get enough for the rights they might only put them up for one year initially??? Interesting.

Just listening to 3AW with Eddie McGuire as a guest.I can't believe what he said.He didn't want live coverage into Sydney on Friday nights because his Sydney based sponsors would be emabarassed by the low ratings when it went head to head to with the league. He seems to think the coverage would get better ratings at midnight. This bloke continues to say he wants what is best for the game and then sprouts this rubbish.

Eddie is truly a man who is worried about losing a bit of exposure - to come out with a statement like that, he has clearly lost his marbles.

Channel 9 commentary is deplorable - cannot listen to Russel, Dwayne and Eddie.

                      I don't mind channel 10 commentary

I hope the 7/10 consortium wins the rights (as long as the FoxFooty is still around too), 'cause I can't stand the 1:10pm starts on Sundays.

Are some people thick or do they really really believe that if Ch 7 get the rights back they will show Sunday afternoon matches at 2pm??? Don't forget that Ch 7 asked for the Swans to play Sunday matches in the late 90's at 12.40pm starts.

Logic suggests that Ch 7 will show 2 matches on Sunday's and they will be either the LIVE 1pm start followed by the 2 hour 4pm replay like Ch 9 do now, or they will show a LIVE 1pm start followed by a LIVE 4pm start from Perth or Adelaide with the news at 7pm.

I wouldn't be betting on Ch7 asking for 3 x 2pm Sunday matches to pick from to fit into a 2pm LIVE match and a 5pm 1 hour highlights package (other LIVE on Fox)
                          Once was, now elsewhere

He can't be as bad as Sam Kekovich's commentary in the Carlton v West Coast match on Fox Footy last year, when he kept on getting the players' names wrong.
