    Why I hate Channel 9

I've just read the SMH TV Guide and this weekend's AFL programming on Sydney TV is reason enough to hope that the rights go to 7 & 10 (or better still, why not just 10?).

On Thurs night the big game between Bris and St Kilda starts at 11.30pm on Ch 9!. On Sat arvo there is no football broadcast, even though North plays Carlton. On Sat night Melb v Essendon is on Ch 10 starting at 11.10pm. On Sun Ch 10 broadcasts the Swans game live. On Sun night 9 excells itself by broadcasting the Richmond v Geelong game starting at 1.30am, after some movie called "Beyond Rangoon". Why even bother broadcasting it? That alone must surely anger those in the AFL who will be involved in the broadcast rights decision.

    PATHETIC!!

TEN is showing Monday arvo instead of Saturday arvo. The deal only allows them one. Foxtel gets the other one. This is the norm for long week-ends.

My take on the TV rights

My take on the TV rights:

Last year Ch 9/ Packer started up their usual bully-boy tactics with channel 10 to get a slice of the finals in the next TV deal.

Channel 10 fearing the power and influence of 9, decided to seek out another partner in 7 with whom to deal with. 10 may not want to join 7, but they simply had to let 7 in to counteract 9 attempted push into finals.

The AFL in general wont want to change broadcast partners again. Ideally the AFL want continuity, and of course more money, although they obviously prefer 10 as a broadcast partner over 9 because 10 push the game into NSW/QLD and dont snipe at the league like McGuire does. The AFL would like 9 to stay involved but not expand their contribution - ie AFL finals on 9 would be second fiddle behind NRL finals in NSW/QLD.

7 have the last rights of refusal, so the AFL dont want 10 to get permanently into bed with 7. They want to keep all networks individual, so the AFL allocate games, not the other way around.
Of course packer wont let 7 & 10 get the AFL for nothing. 7 will pay a big price for getting the game back. This means more money for the AFL and clubs and a 2nd Sydney team.

So I predict the starting bid on the rights will be essentially what we have now. 9/10/foxtel $100m per year.
7 & 10 will trump that with slight more cash and greater penetration into NSW/QLD. 9 will match 7's bid with more cash but not as much NSW/QLD coverage, then its up to 7 to see if it will use its last rights clause to trump it again with 10. Meanwhile 10 sits pretty in the middle.

Does anyone know if the Swans V Hawks game is going to be shown live in Melbourne/Regional Victoria?

Unfortunately if you live in NSW or Qld and follow AFL, you need to have Foxtel.

If 7 get it back it will be the same coverage as last time. Friday nights 11:15pm or later start.

AFL won't shift NRL up here however there was talk of the Friday NRL game being telecast live ( now that Bourke the dork has gone) at 7:30pm and AFL at 9:30pm on Channel 9.
Same old on Ch 10 and Foxtel.

9 might have to compromise by sharing finals with 10 which is the same deal they would get from 7.

Why would the AFL want 9 ?
They are commited to rugby, and they never do anything to promote the game in NSW.
Eddie spends plenty of time promoting Collingwood in Sydney, but watch his show and see where they put Sydney's team lists every week - last.
              9 sucks.
I hope they stay in the bid just long enough to get the rights up about 140 mil a year and then I hope they p i ss off- AFL needs commitment.
