Just interested on your thoughts about Kevin Sheedy. Personally i think this year should be his last after friday nights game.....Lovett-Murray on Whitnall in the last quarter?
With the sides he's had he should have won about 8 flags, not 4. He has never got out of his comfort zone and gone to coach a club struggling both on-field and off-field. That's why I rate both Malthouse and Pagan ahead of him. You could say anyone would be happy with 4 flags in 25 years, but with the talent Essendon have had while hes been there I don't think it's as good as everyone thinks.
he has been pretty good though, but i agree is overrated. He is not a scratch on Leigh Matthews, but i wouldnt put malthouse ahead of him, possibly level.
I think Malcolm Blight was better than sheedy and malthouse, and as much as i hate the kangas and carlton dennis pagan is an outstanding coach
What Sheedy has done (not once but several times), and Matthews and Malthouse haven't, is built premiership teams from scratch. Matthews' record with Brisbane is outstanding but he inherited the core of the group. Even at Collingwood most of the squad was already there, and Pies fans have accused him of leaving the squad in pretty poor shape when he left.
Malthouse did manage to get a pretty ordinary group (with one outstanding player) playing very solid, consistent football for two years but still didn't bring Collingwood the flag he craved. And at WC he largely inherited a squad with many concession picks.

Goodness, doesn't anyone rememer how crap Blighty was in Adelaide? I know it's simply ages ago, but still, how soon we forget ...

Yeah, crap effort those back-to-back flags...
Captain Logic is not steering this tugboat.

As I recall, when Sheedy started at Essendon they actually already had players there which is why they needed a coach.

he almost took geelong to several flags except they choked and he turned the rabble crows into a back to back flag team!!!! the only one ever in the 16 team competition.
He coached teams in an entertaining, attacking style! was a champ! I also think he is a good commentator

Leigh Matthews will tell you that he felt the club didn't have faith in his decision making, after he wanted to get a particular player but the board went against him - and that was basically the beginning of the end for him.
Others will tell you that drafting and paying Barry Mitchell an absolute fortune to sit on the bench given the quality midfield they already had, was a classic example of Leigh's decision making.
Smarter ones know the heart was ripped out of the place in Oct 91, and nobody could replace what had been lost.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time
