Very hard to get hold of a ticket as a member of the general public. Best bets are:

    a) be a member of a club competing in the match, preferably one with a GF ticket guarantee or at least preference. If you don't think the Swans will get there in your lifetime buy a membership for another club. The Dees might be a reasonable bet, especially since they don't have many members

    b) become an MCG or AFL member - but there is probably a 20 year or so waiting list

    c) get in with a corporate that gets a decent allocation and get yourself invited as a guest

    d) get yourself into a senior management position or on a player list at an AFL club - all clubs get an internal allocation

    e) scalp one - not strictly legal but I'm sure there are ways if you really want one

    f) Ansett, when they existed, used to sell a limited number of travel packages at the start of the year which included a GF ticket. You landed up paying through the nose for the ticket.

    g) Some clubs (including the Swans I think) sell tickets for their pre-GF breakfast and include a ticket to the game. You'll probably land up paying close to $1000.

Went to the 1996 GF as a member of a competing club - the Swans of course.

Went to the 1998 one after buying an Ansett package at the start of the year.

Was invited to go with a close mate to the 1997 one after he won two tickets from the Swans for recruiting a huge number of new members to the club but we both landed up giving them to a couple of other friends who were huge St Kilda fans.

Currently have GF guarantee with my Swans membership (only if the Swans are in it) and have decided I don't want to go to another one until the Swans are in it.

MCC Membership doesn't guarantee a ticket, even after the 20 yr wait. They currently have a ballot system for the majority of tickets and the rest are walk up start, first in best dressed.

Being at a grand final is worth every cent mate!

The best of course was being at the 1996 Grand final featuring the mighty swans and I luckily won tickets to the 1994 grand final between WC and Geelong at Barassi's BBQ!!

If you look at AFL travel on the AFL website they have just started selling Grand final packages which includes the Adelaide Crows GF breakfast in Melbourne. Think they cost $1200 - $1500 though!

Best bet is buying grand final guarantee with the Swan's membership and cling on to the hope that we will get there!
                Swannies for life!

Will the new stands at the MCG be finished in time for this year's GF? What will be the new capacity when they are finished?

Should be close to it, as they have to ready for the Games in March next year.

If they follow the pattern from previous years the structure of the latest chunk wll be pretty much complete but not fitted out except that they will get the concourse level open (though not necessarily complete). You might recall that the first year of the rebuild they only got the safety approvals to let the public use the new concourse a week before the GF. I think they have been better organised since then.

I think the reconstruction takes the capacity back up to just over 100,000 so will probalbly be around 85,000 for the GF this year.

according to the official project summary

"The ultimate capacity of the ground is 100,000, with a capacity of 97,000 for the Commonwealth Games due to the removal of some seating to enable the athletics track to be laid."
