Lloyd would miss every other game if they did. And he wouldnt be getting many free kicks and subsequent goals either. After Saturday nights game he is right up there in my five most hated players list.

Its been going on as long as the game has been played. The clueless idiots who officiate our games know who the serial culprits are (DHS nominated them in the Hun) but continue to get sucked in. The worst I have seen in my time were Bartlett and Peter Hudson. Hudson was a brilliant player but the biggest umpire sook ever.

Didnt they bring in the "dropping the ball" rule in the mid 70's to curb KB and his habit of dropping the ball and raising his hands high everytime he got tackled to make out he was being held without the ball?

Correct me if i am wrong.

Nope, thats certainly how i remember it too - he was the master of just dropping it in front of him the moment he felt pressure on his back.

In the paper the article is suurounded by Oscar statues with players faces. Crouch is the only swan there.

Didn't see the hard copy article for obvious reasons, but they did have Humphery-Smith on WLF as usual on a Tuesday evening, and he listed his top stager for each club, with Crouch getting the gong for the Swans, so that's probably the reason for what you saw Scott.

They changed the rule because of Bartlett.

I think it's already possible to penalise stagers within the rules of the game as they currently stand. All that's required is a change of interpretation.

Under the laws of the game, the umpire can give a free kick if they are being abused by a player. The signal given by the umpire for such a free is to place their palm on their chest. If this rule was extended to cover cases where the umpire believes beyond reasonable doubt that the player was attempting to stage for a free, then the umpire would pay the free the other way. It has to be an obvious attempt, such as where the umpire was watching the players throughout the "infringement".

Such an idea could work well if done right. At present, the payoff matrix favours the stager because there is little risk and great reward. If the stager was penalised with free kicks, the payoff matrix is substantially altered, because now there is a much greater risk. It gets even worse for the stagers if an idle umpire chooses to watch known stagers.
