Why a final eight and not a final five?

Do the math: a final eight guarantees mediocre Victorian teams a chance to play finals footy; a final five runs the risk that there will be no team that can do it for Victoria come finals time. It's a conspiracy! Ask Iemma!

The AFL just want more money - 9 games under the top 8 system compared with 6 under a top 5.

        I'm on the Chandwagon!!!

If you cannot compete for the premiership, it's better to be young and exciting than middle-aged and dowdy.

It's the best system, that's why.
          Watch out for Port.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

It's a retarded system and after tomorrow we will be back to the top four, two of whom have had to get rid of the lower-four serial pests.

Spot on. And it is not so much the gate, as the TV money. I like a top 4, 1 play 4, 2 plays 3, winners battle it out. But a final 8 keeps more bums in front of the tele watching all those ads...

Another point is that by about round 18-19 you know who will make the top4/5 and if your teams one of the other 3 quarters who wont make it then whats the point in watching.

8 teams keeps heaps more people motivated to watch, and then watch the team that beat them be beaten.

Final 8 is the best system because its all about hope. With this system even the ********test, poorest club (i.e. Kangaroos) can give their 1 thousand supporters some false hope of possibly have a successful year. And plus, if it was only a top 5, we'd have even more clubs like collingwood and hawthorn trying to lose games mid-season in order to obtain draft picks.
