    15 kms

Overheard somewhere (& I can't actually remember where given the amount of media I've been sucking in on sport lately) that players are restricted to running 15 kms per game for health reasons & this explains why so many midfielders get benched these days.

Is this correct? It's the first time I've ever heard it. how the heck could you monitor it?

Hall runs 14.5km a game, let alone the midfield: Source

"Sydney Swans centre half-forward Barry Hall runs approximately 14.5km per match, although AFL midfielders average 20km a game. "

They measure it with a GPS (Global Positioning System) system:

An article mentioning GPS and AFL.

I thought it was a speedometer, with tripmeter capabilities.

I think they get benched so much cause they are exhausted. I have seen Ablett coming off the ground a number of times absolutely spent.

If he can make it to the bench, he hasn't worked hard enough (well, that's what P.E. teachers would think!)

I heard a commentator mention earlier in the season that Jolly was the most benched player along with Daniel Harris.

So this 15km limit would be a furphy then? No one has heard of any actual rule that would prevent someone staying on the ground coz they've run too much? I know this is the first time I'd ever heard a reference to it.

I remember years ago reading that boundary umpires can run up to 26Km a match - that's a half marathon every week! AND they have to check their egos in the locker!
