Swans chat Lap of honour for Marty

ADMIRED Swans defender Martin Mattner will become the first non-captain to be given a farewell lap of honour during the Swans' Friday night blockbuster against Carlton at the SCG

The 30-year-old gritty defender, who announced his immediate retirement three weeks ago because of a debilitating hips injury, will be just the third Swan honoured with a farewell lap of the SCG following former captains Barry Hall and Craig Bolton.

Pretty sure Matthew Nicks had a farewell lap?
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

They just changed the time from half-time to pre-game (7:20).

No I am fairly sure Nicksy didn't. Just made an announcement that "his brain said do that, and his body couldn't". He had a marvelous farewell speech at the 2005 B&F . We were all in tears. Classy man.

Another classy man, Marty Mattner. Make sure everyone gets to the ground early and be there for him.

I am too old to remember all the details. But as Nicksy is at the head of my list of beloveds, I am fairly sure he didn't but I am not going to put my house on it, I have been known to have an inconvenient memory some of the time.

So what was everyone's consensus on the lap of honour?
It was a pretty poor effort as far as I could see, Friday night games have a lot of people struggling to make it into their seats in time for the first bounce let alone anything before it, due to the rain it was a walk around (which is fine) but a fair part of the walk was unannounced as it was just Marty making his way to out front of the Members for the interview (came out the same gate the Auskick kiddies go in & out through), a decent amount of people were waiting along the fence in the Churchill & Brewongle stands and didn't get a chance to wish him well.
There was a fair amount of complaining around me, the consensus seemed to be that it was a last minute effort and should have been left to either half time or the next home game which is an afternoon.
A real pity because Marty deserves a huge farewell from the fans

I missed it because I didn't account for the Friday night traffic, compounded with the rain, heading towards Moore Park.
