Too quick, too strong, too skilful, too good. That's the 2008 Cats, and the comparision applies not just to their opponents on Saturday night but, one would think, every other team in the competition. The Swans were, in many ways, gallant in defeat, keeping the running going right up to the end. But when you only have one player - Hall - clearly winning his position, it is hard to stay in the hunt in a match for very long.
At any other time of the season, it would be easy to be philosophical about this loss, and just sit back and admire the juggernaut that the Cats have become. With finals looming and the Swans slipping precariously, the worry becomes whether they can regroup sufficiently to win at least the one game required to see some kind of September action this year. At least if we do get spanked by Collingwood this coming weekend, we can it expect it to happen with the return of the zip of Jack, who responded emphatically to his relegation this week, with the explosive class of Vezspremi, and with the ever improving Bird cementing his role in the core of the Swans midfield.
Goals:
Sydney: Hall 5, McVeigh 2, Goodes 2, Moore 2, Kirk, Mattner, Bird
Geelong: Byrnes 3, Ablett 3, Lonergan, 3 Johnson 2, Mooney 2, Varcoe 2, Stokes, Bartel, Ottens, Gamble, Prismall
Best:
Sydney: Hall, Bevan, J Bolton, Kennelly, Bird, Buchanan
Geelong: Ablett, Bartel, Corey, Lonergan, Ling, Ottens
Injuries:
Sydney: Leo Barry (hamstring) replaced by Malceski in selected side
Geelong: Matthew Scarlett (back) replaced by Varcoe in selected side
