    Kiss of Death

Swans fans will no doubt be worried by the fact that Robert Walls has tipped Sydney to make the finals in 2003. In his pre-season assessment in The Age, Walls forecasts a 7th placing for the Swans, based on a favourable draw and a strong forward line. Summing-up, he said:

"The team, while finishing 11th, had the fifth best percentage (107 per cent) which proves they can play good football. They also had little or no luck in tight games. There was a draw, three losses by two point margins and one by a goal.

And after the best part of seven years of demanding coaching by Eade, the team was freshened up by the more attacking style of Roos. Under the new coach, the Swans won five of their last six games, and by big margins too.

    WHY THEY'LL MAKE THE FINALS

Twelve home games helps. So too does a forward line that will boast Barry Hall, Davis, O'Loughlin, Matthew Nicks, Goodes and Paul Williams. It is not one dimensional, and opportunities will come from a competent midfield led by evergreen Darryn Cresswell, Maxfield and the developing Nic Fosdike, Jared Crouch and Tadhg Kennelly.

    WHAT WILL HOLD THEM BACK

A big question mark hangs over Jason Ball. Can he return after a year out of the game to once again be a dominant ruckman? And the backline needs fine tuning. Dunkley will be a huge loss at full back. And there is little dash coming out of the back half. Their best defensive rebounder is Paul Williams, but he is needed further forward to be a match winner."

Fortunately, 'Caro', 'Timmy' and 'Dermie' have hopefully neutralised Walls' kiss-of-death by predicting a bottom three finish for the Swans.
