SCG Practice Match - Early Reports

AFL.COM reports that Sydney ended their pre-season schedule with a 15.13 (103) to 8.14 (62) victory over Richmond in front of a very small crowd at the SCG at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Adam Goodes, Jason Saddington, Nick Davis and Stuart Maxfield were the main contributors, with full-forward Barry Hall, who kicked eight goals for the Swans. Richmond will rue its missed chances kicking seven behinds in the opening quarter and five in the third, with Matthew Richardson the main culprit booting 0.6.

Ray Hall got the visitors off to a great start booting a major within the first minute, but Barry Hall replied with one of his own ten minutes later. Richardson should have hit straight back from a free kick adjacent to the posts but missed, and failed again 30 metres out directly in front four minutes later. Former Swans ruckman Greg Stafford's goal was matched by Barry Hall's second goal late in the term before Nick Davis kicked a goal to edge the Swans in front 3.7 to 1.1.

Davis then edged the home side closer with his second early in the second quarter from a Goodes short kick, before Ryan O'Keefe put the Swans in front. Both teams traded goals before Barry Hall's third for the red-and-whites saw his team go into the main break leading by one point.

The third quarter saw both teams off-target until the 22nd minute when Jared Crouch and Goodes combined to put Paul Williams in for a major. Richardson then kicked his sixth behind of the game - and Richmond's fifth of the term - before Barry Hall kicked his fourth for Sydney. Leon Cameron's goal on the siren narrowed the gap to six points with Sydney leading 8.7 to 6.13 going into the final term.

The final quarter was all Sydney with Nick Davis kicking his third, Barry Hall kicked another four before being rested, and Scott Stevens and Ben Mathews both got on the scoreboard.

AAP reports that Sydney's new strike force of Barry Hall and Nick Davis gave Swans supporters a tantalising taster for the coming season as they helped cut up Richmond in an AFL practice match at the SCG.

Playing together for the first time, the pair combined for 11 goals with Hall bagging 8.1 and Davis 3.3 in Sydney's 15.13 (103) to 8.14 (62) victory.

Behind by 12 points at the first break, Sydney slammed on 13 goals to five in the remainder of the game, booting seven of the nine last quarter majors.

Former Magpie Davis was playing just his second game for Sydney, but it was his first with Hall, who missed last week's match against Melbourne because of a hip injury.

"They have got the dual prongs down there, they looked very dangerous, so I'm sure that set up is going to worry a number of sides, especially on this ground," Richmond coach Danny Frawley said.

"I thought in that first quarter Richmond probably kept us in the game a little bit, but certainly the second, third and fourth quarters was very pleasing," Sydney coach Paul Roos said.

Roos gave his club an eight out of ten rating for its pre-season campaign. He was delighted with Barry Hall's work rate and his persistence after getting little change out of the Tigers' defence in the first quarter.

"They flooded back in the first quarter and had a lot of numbers back and he just kept on persevering," Roos said.

He was also pleased with the performance of his back line, especially Jason Saddington and Craig Bolton who subdued Ray Hall and Richardson after being outpointed by the Tigers duo in the first quarter.

Neither side reported any major casualties, though Roos said Nic Fosdike corked a calf muscle but was expected to be fit for the opening premiership round.

Sydney youngster Mark Powell was reported for striking Richmond's Greg Tivendale in the third quarter.
