Ball and Barry finding form for round 1

Jason Ball and Leo Barry both finished their pre-season with good form in last week's Vili's Cup game. Barry was rated best-on-ground, and Ball kicked two goals. An extra bonus was the speed with which Stephen Doyle found form in his first outing for the season after struggling for touch early in the match.

Jarrad Sundqvist, Sean Dempster and Mark Powell all put in strong performances, and rookie James Meikeljohn kicked a goal himself, as well as setting up Doyle for a major.

Michael O?Loughlin will miss this week's Carlton match for the Swans with a knee injury, while Ben Fixter faces a fitness test on an injured foot.

The key to the match may well depend on whether the Blues can contain Barry Hall. Carlton are hoping that strong defender Michael Martyn recovers from a knee injury to take on Hall, and also expects club champion Corey McKernan to be over a knee injury in time to play. If Martyn isn't fit then Glenn Manton or Simon Beaumont will probably get the job on Hall, match-ups that clearly didn't work last season.

Brendan Fevola has taken a step up for the Blues at full-forward so far this year and Anthony Koutoufides is also returning to his pre-2000 form. The Swans will need to find someone to run closely with Koutoufides if past history is anything to go on.
