SYDNEY AFL ROUND 4 2012.

The round started early with a midweek Wednesday game, being the ANZAC Day public holiday. A stand-alone Premier Division match was fixture, with Wests hosting Balmain at Picken Oval. A larger than normal crowd was on hand, and plenty of vocal support was there for Wests from the supporters gathered in and around the utes on the eastern hill. The match was played in bright sunshine, fantastic conditions for footy.
Before the game, an ANZAC Day ceremony was observed. Lest we forget.
And then the teams lined up to take their places, and the match got under way. Wests went in as underdogs, but it took less than a minute for them to open the scoring, with a clever snap over his shoulder from the pocket by Seamus Pearson going through for a goal; and for a fleeting moment the Magpies had hopes of getting a jump and putting the Dockers under pressure.
But the Dockers, kicking to the club end in the first quarter, quickly found their momentum; and Pearson?s goal would be Wests? only major for the opening term. Sean Bowen on the lead gave the Dockers the lead at the six minute mark, and two goals within a minute to ex-WAFL signing Selby Lee-Steere saw the Dockers open up a break over the Magpies. And as the quarter unfolded, Ben Taggart signalled his intentions to be the spearhead of the Balmain charge as he kicked three goals for the quarter, and the Dockers were out to a 40-point lead at the first change.
The Dockers had been efficient and effective through the midfield during the first term, and up forward they had plenty of goal-kicking options. Despite a few well-publicised departures, the Dockers have kept most of last year?s Grand Final squad intact; and they turned on the dominant display of a team desperate to atone for the disappointment of last year?s decider and go one better in 2012.
It had been a disappointing first term for Wests, but they lifted their intensity in the second term in an attempt to get back into the contest. Playing some better football, the Magpies tackled harder, won some more hard ball, and began to create scoring chances. Presenting himself as a target up forward, Joshua Zoppo kicked three for the quarter. But the Dockers had the answers to every challenge the Magpies could throw at them; and despite playing some better football in the second term, the Magpies were unable to get back to back goals at any time during the quarter; ensuring they would fail to make any dent in the quarter time deficit.
The margin was 44 points in favour of Balmain at half time, but they were far from finished. Emerging from the sheds after half time in a ruthless mood, the Dockers compounded the Magpie misery with eight goals to one in the third term. And the last quarter was just as lopsided, as the Dockers added another six goals while holding the Magpies scoreless. With the Magpies on the ropes, the Dockers sniffed an opportunity to gain an impressive percentage; which could prove handy to them when ladder positions are determined at the end of the home and away season.
In the end, the Dockers won by 129 points. Ben Taggart kicked six goals for the Dockers, with Sean Bowen contributing five goals and Selby Lee-Steere four. Lee Conway, Taggart and Jeremy Kennedy were ball magnets all day for Balmain, and they had many other winners around the ground. For Wests, Josh Zoppo, Robert Bamford and James Muir were among their best.
Despite the lopsided result, ANZAC Day at the footy was a successful occasion, with a healthy crowd in attendance at Picken Oval, most of them then adjourning to the social club next door to catch the rest of the Essendon v Collingwood match.
The re-surfacing work at Olds Park had taken longer than expected, and so the match between North Shore and St George was switched to Gore Hill Oval. And the Bombers made the most of their home ground advantage to hand St George their first loss of 2012, with the home side taking victory by 34 points.
It was goal for goal early, but the Bombers pulled away late in the first term to lead by 13 points at quarter time. Early in the second term, the Bombers got to a 21-point lead; but the Dragons fought back to reduce the margin to five points at the long break. The first half had been an even contest between two teams with genuine aspirations to be there at the business end of the season. But the Bombers got on top in the third term, shutting the Dragons down to just two second half goals as the Bombers landed six goals in the second half to run on to a comfortable win.
Tall ruckman Sam Naismith moved up forward for the Bombers to finish with four goals; while Pat Brackin, Ron Wason and Richie Lynch were among the Bombers? best. For the Dragons, Michael Holmes, Pat McBride and Declan Donohue worked hard all day.
The value of a strong start was underlined at North Dalton Oval on Saturday afternoon, as defending champions Sydney Hill Eagles jumped Illawarra in the first term. The Eagles took advantage of the Lions? slow start, as they kicked six goals to two in the opening quarter to lead by 27 points at the first change. The game then tightened in the second quarter, just one goal apiece and the margin still 27 points at half time.
The Lions were forced into playing catch-up football, and although they lifted in the second half they found the goals hard to find. Three goals to one in the third quarter reduced the margin to 16 points at the last change. Forced to throw caution to the wind in an attempt to force a comeback win, the Lions managed four goals in the last term, but conceded three to fall ten points short.
Tim Garlick kicked four goals for the Eagles in a best on ground performance, while Damon Steer and Leif Stuart were also prominent performers. The Lions found worthy contributors in Ryan Wells, Troy Bartlett and Lewis Wilson. The result sees both teams with two wins from four games.
The Village Green was the venue for a thriller, a roller-coaster of emotions as UNSW-ES took on Pennant Hills. The first quarter was goal for goal, with the Demons leading by four points at the first change. The second term saw the Bulldogs peppering the goals, creating chance after chance, but their goal-kicking radar would let them down. A return of 2.7 for the quarter meant that, despite having had twice as many scoring shots as the Demons in the corner, the Bulldogs? deficit had increased to nine points at the long break.
But there were plenty more twists in this tale, and the Bulldogs lifted their accuracy after half time to land four goals in the third term, and scores were level at the last change. It was a cliff-hanger, a final quarter with plenty of lead changes. But with four goals to three for the quarter, the Demons were holding the parcel of victory when the music stopped.
Pennant Hills took the match by just two points. Phelen Medallist Kieran Wright stood up when the game was there to be won to be best on ground, while Nick Campbell and Tim Wales were also prominent. Sam Tagliabue, Ryan Plant and Jeremy Kiel were among the Bulldogs? best.
UTS confirmed their status as the competition?s biggest improver when the Bats demolished Sydney Uni by 60 points in a high-scoring shootout at Trumper Park on Saturday afternoon.
The Bats soon showed they had plenty of attacking options as they kicked five goals to two in the opening term, and with six goals to two in the second extended their lead to 46 points at half time. The Students struggled to find the firepower to match the explosive UTS charge; but got some attacking momentum going during a short-lived third quarter fightback. But for all their efforts in the third term, when the Students did manage five goals, they could get no closer as the Bats scored five of their own to keep the 46 point margin intact at the last change.
The sting had largely gone out of the contest with the result now beyond doubt, and the Bats cruised through the last quarter with four goals to two to blow the final margin out to ten goals. In just their second season in Premier Division, the Bats find themselves in the top three on the back of wins against both NEAFL-affiliated clubs. Samuel Way, Fergus Adamson and Frank Boland were among UTS?s best, while Sydney Uni found solid service from Peter Casey, Matthew Clarke and Dean McKay.
So after four rounds, there are no undefeated teams. Six teams have lost one game, with UNSW-ES, St George and UTS having played and won one game more than Balmain, North Shore and Pennant Hills. Illawarra and Sydney Hills each have two wins from four. And already a two-game gap has opened up between eighth and ninth; with Wests, Sydney Uni and Campbelltown yet to enjoy the spoils of victory in 2012.
