    Sydney AFL Round 7 2012

    SYDNEY AFL ROUND 7 2012

The Premier Division ladder had already seen a gaping hole between the top eight and the bottom three. Round 7 saw the gap remain intact, with the three bottom teams remaining winless. But one of them, Sydney Uni, went perilously close to breaking through for their first win of 2012.

It?s rare to have a morning start for a Premier Division match, but Sydney Hills Eagles and Sydney Uni had to set the alarm clocks to get to Bruce Purser on Sunday; the match being played as a curtain-raiser for the NEAFL clash between the two clubs. But it was to prove a thrilling contest that would go down to the wire.
Sydney Uni had been winless at this level this season, but for much of the day they looked set to break their duck. Bursting out of the blocks with four quick goals, the Students jumped to a 20-point quarter time lead. And the break and change of ends did little to halt the Sydney Uni momentum in the second term, the Students scoring three goals to two in the second and leading by 27 points at the long break.
But the half time break didn?t seem to work to Sydney Uni?s advantage, as they slowed to a walk in the third quarter. Around the ground, the Eagles began to lift and get back into the contest. Some inaccurate finishing with hold the Eagles back; but their defence was sensational as the Students were kept scoreless for the quarter. The Students remained in front, thanks to the Eagles? wasteful return of 1.6 for the quarter; but with the margin reduced to 15 points, the game was up for grabs.
It was to be a cliff-hanging finish. Twice during the final quarter, the Students scored goals that looked to have wrapped the game up. But the Eagles had the answers; and although there were less scoring chances for the Eagles than in the third term, they made better use of them. Five straight goals was just enough time for the Eagles to pip the Students at the post, recording a heart-stopping one point win.
In the thrilling comeback, Alex Foxall, Michael Clinch and Dominic Killworth stood up and were counted for the Eagles. Sydney Uni were well served on the day by Samuel Orton, Alex Dyson and James Fitzpatrick. Both sides are considerably weakened this year with many of their finals sides from last year playing in the NEAFL; but the Eagles have maintained an even win-loss ratio, while the Students surely can?t be too far away from breaking their duck in 2012.

Saturday afternoon at Monarch saw St George return to the winning list in style, as the Dragons dominated from start to finish to inflict more misery on Campbelltown.
Both sides went into the game with an attacking mindset, the Dragons keen to get a score on the board early while the Blues were looking for a circuit-breaker to kick-start their season. And the opening quarter was a high-scoring shootout. Both sides went direct, finding plenty of room to move and attack; with 12 goals being scored for the quarter. But the Dragons had the edge, with nine of those first quarter goals being in the St George row on the scoreboard, and a 38-point lead at the first change.
The game tightened up in the second term, and although the Blues were outscored three goals to two, they competed hard for the ball for much of the quarter. But the Blues were again locked out of the contest after half time; held score-less in the third term as the Dragons extended the lead to 76 points.
And then the floodgates opened, the margin blowing out over three figures; as the Dragons helped themselves to nine goals to one for the quarter. The final margin was 122 points, a reflection of St George?s control throughout the afternoon.
Nick Ryan completed a personal best on the forward line with a bag of eight goals, while Daniel Napper contributed five goals, Declan Donohue and David Ryan four. Ben Jones, Beau Heeney and Nick Ryan were among St George?s best; as the Dragons remain contenders for the finals. Dave Linsen, Marcus Linsen and Hamish Sherwood tried hard all day for the Blues, but it was another disappointing result for Campbelltown; who in their six games so far this season have lost all of them, four of them by over 100 points.

The lights were switched on at Henson Park on Saturday night, as Wests played hosts to UNSW-ES. The ladder-leading Bulldogs didn?t have everything their own way in the opening quarter, as the winless Magpies were determined to make an impression early. But the Bulldogs had enough ability to conjure up goals when they mattered to lead by 16 points at the first change. The second term saw only three scoring shots to each team, but the Bulldogs made slightly better use of theirs to lead by 21 points at the long break.
But the premiership quarter saw the Bulldogs step up and raise the intensity, and the Magpies found themselves unable to keep up. With the midfield racing out of the centre with regularity, the Bulldogs found the momentum rolling their way as the scoreboard continued to tick over. Nine goals to one saw the margin stretch to 69 points at the last change, and with six unanswered goals in the last term, the final margin blew out to 101 points.
Leigh Lavery was unstoppable on the forward line, finishing with eight goals. Dane Rampe and Jeremy Kiel each put in four goals to the Bulldog cause. Hayden Nichols, Richard Troon and James Pascoe were among their best. For the Magpies, Brenton Mumme, Lyn Roehrig and Stephen Hudson were tireless workers all evening. The result sees the high-flying Bulldogs maintain top spot on the ladder; but the Magpies will have to wait another week for their first win of 2012.

UTS returned to the winners? list at Waverley Oval on Saturday afternoon when the Bats controlled proceedings, inching further ahead every quarter to complete a comfortable 82-point victory over Illawarra.
The Bats enjoyed the better of the early exchanges to score five goals to two in the opening term and lead by 17 points at quarter time. Having taken the lead, the Bats won every quarter, preventing the Lions from gaining any sort of momentum that could get them back into the contest.
The margin was only 21 points at half time, but the premiership quarter was a blowout. It was high scoring, eight goals to two, but the Bat juggernaut was near on unstoppable as they held a 59 point advantage at three quarter time. And the Lions were unable to salvage anything out of the match as the Bats put in a four-quarter performance with six goals to two in the final term.
On a weekend when plenty of forwards kicked big bags of goals, David Lavender got into the goal-scoring action with eight goals, while Patrick Healey weighed in with four. Fergus Adamson, Frank Boland and David Lavender were pivotal performers for the Bats; while Lewis Wilson, Wade Edmen and Rhys Cutifani were among Illawarra?s best. The result keeps the Bats in the top five, but sees the Lions in eighth place, and needing to string some wins together to keep in the finals race.

Two teams that are likely to be there at the business end of the season were in action at Mike Kenny Oval on Sunday afternoon, and the game was worthy of a game between potential finalists as Pennant Hills and Balmain fought out a thriller.
Early on, it was a tight defensive match, with neither side able to shake off the attentions of their opponents. Just one goal apiece was scored in the first quarter, with the Dockers leading by three points at quarter time. But the second term saw the Demons open up what would ultimately turn out to be the match-winning break as they kicked four goals to one in the second term to break away to a 20-point lead at half time.
But the Dockers weren?t going to go down without a fight, turning up the attacking flair and outscoring the Demons by five goals to three. And in the final term, the Dockers continued to attack, getting back to within a kick in the closing stages. But the Demons held on for dear life, playing out time to take out a hard-earned and thrilling three-point win.
Daniel Witt, Luke Bilbe and Ted Widmer were prominent around the ground for the Demons; while Ben Taggard, Daniel Brian and Jerome Farrell were among Balmain?s best. In a game that could be a preview of finals action, it was an important psychological blow struck by the Demons, who move up to second on the ladder.

A third of the way through the season, UNSW-ES enjoy top spot with six wins and an imposing percentage. Pennant Hills and UTS are a game behind, with the Demons having a game in hand. North Shore, Balmain and St George are on five wins, with the Bombers having already had both their byes and a game in hand over the Dockers and Dragons.
Sydney Hills and Illawarra are on three wins, a game outside the finals, with the Lions yet to have a bye this season. Sydney Uni?s, Wests?s and Campbelltown?s first wins of 2012 are yet to come.
