SYDNEY AFL ROUND 12 2012
To the relief of everyone, the week leading up to round 12 was mainly fine, and with sunshine and blue skies on the weekend, conditions were far better than in the previous fortnight. A full round of matches was played across the divisions. And in Premier Division, the race for finals berths became tighter, with North Shore and Pennant Hills underlining their status as genuine contenders for this year?s title.
North Shore?s campaign last year hit a rocky opening when they were comprehensively upset by Wests at Picken Oval. Determined to ensure there would be no repeat this time, the Bombers stormed out of the blocks; and in a sometimes firey opening term asserted themselves with eight goals to one to lead by 44 points at the first change. And although missing some easy shots at goal in the second term that could have put them even further ahead, the Bombers still kicked four goals to two and went into the rooms at the long break with a 63-point advantage.
There was no let-up from the North Shore juggernaut in the third term, as they stepped up the pressure further with seven goals to two. The lead briefly touched 100 points during the quarter, and was on 92 points at the last change. But as if that wasn?t enough, the Bombers continued to exert complete control over the contest in the final quarter, adding another seven unanswered goals; boosting their already imposing percentage with a commanding 136-point win.
Daniel Roberts was an unstoppable force up forward to finish with six goals, while Pat Brackin chipped in to add four goals to the Bomber cause. Brackin, along with Brendan Fitzgerald and Pat Codling, was named among the Bombers? best; but it was hard to find a Bomber who lowered his colours to his opponent on the day. On a difficult day for the Magpies, Rory Miller, Lynn Roehrig and Stephen Hudson continued to persevere all afternoon.
Campbelltown, winless in 2011 and the last team to break through for a victory in 2012, finally moved off the bottom when they won their second game in three weeks, a hard-fought 20-point win over Sydney Uni at Monarch Oval.
The Blues were the stronger team in the first half, but inaccurate kicking in front of goal stopped them from gaining full reward for effort. Kicking 3.7 in the first quarter could have been costly; but the Campbelltown defence was magnificent as they held the Students score-less in the first term and to just two points by half time. By then, the Blues had seven goals on the board; and with a 53-point lead looked to be heading to an easy win.
But the Students, stunned by their poor first half, came out breathing fire in the second half and began to peg back the deficit. Five unanswered goals in the third quarter saw the margin reduced to 15 points, and suddenly the Students began to have a sniff of an unlikely comeback win. But the Blues, having worked so hard in the first half, were determined not to let their good work go unrewarded, and tightened up the game in the final quarter. The Students were held to two goals, and the Blues managed to get a goal themselves in the final term to put the issue beyond doubt.
Josh Van Luenen, Daniel Fraser and N Smith won plenty of ball for Campbelltown to get them on their way to victory. For the Students, M Scott, M Powys and Dane Roberton worked hard all day.
For the second week in a row, the matter of inaccuracy in front of goals was a major issue in Pennant Hills? games. Last week they?d overcome some appalling inaccuracy to fall over the line against Sydney Hills Eagles. This week, they were the beneficiaries of UTS?s poor finishing, as despite the Bats having more scoring shots, the Demons recorded a 22-point win at Waverley Oval.
The first quarter was a high-scoring shootout, with the Demons holding the lead by three points at the first change. It was lower-scoring in the second term, but with two goals to one the lead was extended to nine points at half time.
The Bats had the better of play in the third term, but were unable to make enough out of the numerous chances they created. The Demons scored goals with their only two scoring shots for the term, but against the run of play it was enough to win the quarter. With only 14 points in it at the last change, the Bats were still in the contest; but kicked themselves out of any hope of a comeback with 0.5 in the last quarter for a final return of 6.17 for the day.
It hadn?t been all plain sailing for Pennant Hills; but as they have done so often in recent seasons, they controlled play when it mattered and did enough to record the win. Kieran Wright, Alex Goodall and Matt Carey were among the key contributors for the Demons; while Ben Moyle, Joel Minichello and M King were prominent performers for the Bats. With the win, and thanks to UNSW-ES having the bye this weekend, the Demons move to top of the ladder.
A twilight contest at Blacktown No 2 saw Illawarra end their three-game losing streak and keep themselves in the finals race when they overcame Sydney Hills Eagles in an entertaining and high-scoring contest.
There were numerous changes of the lead during a shootout in the opening quarter, with the Eagles five points to the good at half time. The Eagles had defeated the Lions when the two sides met at North Dalton earlier this season; and looked well placed to do it again when they kicked four goals to two in the second term and led by 21 points at the long break.
But whatever Illawarra mentor Ken Ewen-Chappell said to his charges in the rooms at half time had the desired effect, as the momentum of the game changed completely and the Lions were in complete control during the premiership quarter. Nine goals to one for the quarter saw the deficit quickly erased, with the Lions running the ball wherever they wanted to turn the deficit into a 29-point lead at the last change. Try as they might to turn their fortunes around, the Eagles were unable to make any impact on the scoreboard, as their four goals for the term were cancelled out by four Illawarra goals.
The final margin was 31 points; with the Lions keeping themselves in the finals hunt, although still a long way behind the top five. Ryan Price finished with four goals for the Lions in a best-on-ground performance, while Rhys Cutifani and Keegan Litchfield were also ball magnets for the Lions all evening. For the Eagles, J Moeller worked the forward line well to finish with five goals, and along with Dominic Killworth and Mark Skuse were among the Eagles? best.

The third quarter was also the decisive term in the Sunday game between Balmain and St George at Henson Park.
With both sides keen for a win to be in the top five at this point of the season, it was the Dragons who had the better of the start. Seven goals to three in the opening quarter saw St George leading by 25 points at quarter time, and although the second quarter was lower scoring, the Dockers were only able to make up five points of that deficit in the second term.
But when the sides emerged from the rooms after half time, it was as if they had swapped jumpers. Balmain players who were barely sighted in the first half began to become influential, while Dragons who had played well in the first half had less of a role. A run of six goals to one for the quarter saw the Dockers hit the lead and hold a 14-point advantage at the last change. St George attempted a comeback in the last quarter, but an inaccurate return of 2.7 ended their hopes.
The Dockers won by 15 points. Ben Taggart, Tom Matson and Dane Noble were key performers for Balmain; while Lloyd Perris, Bryce Addison and Paul Sain were among the Dragons? best.
