whilst i'd love the 14 to make a comeback i think kirky has made the #31 very valueable

when he finishes, it will be a significant number

i think we go one either of two ways

1. do as richmond has done and make it the captains jumper
2. just treat it as a jumper like any other and give it out two an improving young player.

if we try to consistently "annoint" a "worthy" player every time i think we take the risk of it becoming too much of an issue. last year we had a strong debate of whether it should be given to bevan, as deemed "worthy", or not. had it been so, i think the expectation and disappointment may have resulted in harsh judgement of him for his comparatively ordinary year.

if the fuss was put aside and it was just given to a young, perhaps relatively low-profile, player then the expectation, pressure and resultant disappointment would be lessened. or we might get a nice suprise.

i think it goes without saying a captain is going to be able to handle any such expectation.

(btw i think kirk would be a fine number 14, i just think we should be thinking of how this is handled in the long term.)

Yep. Either Mike or Des suggested this when we were talking about it on Sunday. I think he's a perfect fit, and he deserves it after how much he has achieved in the two years since he was delisted.

I'm too scared to put this sentiment in its own thread, lest I be lynched, so I'll write it timidly here:

BBBH-- you were great, you were inspirational, you're now a premiership captain, and we pray you'll be a huge part of the leadership group for many years to come.

But Kirky for cap'n 2006 all the way. If the last 2 weeks hasn't proved that this man is the heart and soul of the playing group (and the moral successor to P. Kelly), then I haven't been paying attention.

personally , i like what richmond did with their #17 jumper and making it the captains one.
i would love to see the swans do a similar thing
