    Swans chances in 2006

Today on Sportsworld (Channel 7's Sunday morning sports programme) they interviewed Hutcho and the Ox ( David Schwarz-ex Melbourne Demons) who do a regular (and usually humorous) AFL piece during the season. Back in April of this year after the Swans were being bagged by all and sundry, the Ox went on to say that they were gone, they were a disgrace etc etc. Egg on faces....abject apologies all round....they were wrong, and they admitted it. Now, when asked about predictions for next year the Ox nominated Geelong and suggested that St Kilda, West Coast and Collingwood...yes, Collingwood would round out the top four! No place for the premiers in next year's top four? Even the bookies have us on the third line of betting. I know it's going to be a hard act to follow, and we may need to be let down fairly gently, but seriously.......

Since people seem to be going all out to get egg on their faces come August 2006, I'm going to put in my little egg-earner (just to see what the fuss is all about with egg-on-face) ...

You heard it here first, I am now on record, that the Ainters will NOT make top 4 next year !!!

Edit : I will wait until after trade week before I start thinking about where our boys may finish

Consecutive flags will be very tough. But it's a bit easier if the media "does a Roos" and plays down our chances.
        Thanks Ox.

(BTW - if they have a fit list , yes, I think Collingwood can make the eight)

Hmmmm ... You are not me (thankfully ... and you'd be saying the same) ... But I have been arguing THAT exact point with a number of Aints supporters since he took over from Blight ...

Thomas may not coach a premiership - the Saints 'window of opportunity' might just be a lot shorter than people think. Gehrig's gone (I think he said he was going to retire at the end of this year), older players like Harvey, Aussie Jones, Peckett who they still get quite a lot out of won't be around much longer...they still have an immensely talented list, and are classic frontrunners, so it will be interesting to see if they make it.

Very satisfying to win a flag before them with all the top draft picks they've had in the last few years!! Just goes to show this competition doesn't necessarily reward mediocrity after all, you can get first crack at all the best young talent in the land under this current AFL system, but premierships - you've got to earn those! Just ask the Swans...

Harvey will go around for just one more season and I think Peckett will get the chance for one more year. Gehrig is likely to play on but Aussie Jones has retired and will be playing local club footy in Melbourne next year. The window is getting smaller but they have the talent and ability to fit though with what they have got. Just need to stay clear of injury and have some of their "young stars" grow up a bit and take the pressure off Harvey to lift the side.

That can't be, after all we've spent two year being told otherwise

Jones has retired. I haven't heard a final decision from Gehrig, but the weight of opinion seems to be that he'll play one more year. Harvey is going around once more, and the futures of Peckett and Thompson are, I think, still undecided - either by the players or the club itself.

In addition to those players, Powell and Hudghton are 29 and Hamill is 28. They're lucky in that they have a core of very, very good players - Riewoldt, Koschitze, Ball, Dal Santo, Maguire and co - who will be around for another cycle after this one, but the current window closes in another two years, I reckon. About the same time ours does.

Thanks for that - in the excitement of knocking them out of the finals I wasn't sure which of the older Saints were retiring and which weren't.

But it will be interesting - talent wise they are very dangerous still.

And knowing that we won the premiership before the Saints did with all of their priority picks just makes it that much better!

                          Gee, you're being generous.

it may seem that i am hedging my bets but if we have a good run with injuries - top 4 and go on from there. otherwise, unless we have a absolute nightmare with injuries, my expectation is still that we will win at least one final.
then again, i think it would be worth trying 15-16 players on field so what would i know
