Does our gameplan need to evolve?

I've had some time off work recently with the flu and have been passing the hours by watching some swans matches from the past few seasons. It's interesting to see how much our gameplan changed and evolved in that time.

While our gameplan seemed to be effective this year, there will no doubt be 15 coaches taking it apart bit by bit and trying to find ways both to combat it and borrow from it making it a tougher task to win next year and beyond.

Does anyone else feel that maybe we need to add a plan C to our allready successful plan A and B?

We must continue to evolve - if we stand still, we will be overtaken very quickly. But this should occur naturally as the team evolves. Our midfield is pretty young and will continue to improve. Malceski, Moore and McVeigh will all be given chances to snare a regular spot. We have to hope that Davis is fitter again next year, so he can spend longer in the middle. I think Tadgh will provide more run more often next year. In short, we can expect the midfield balance to shift towards a slightly more offensive orientation.

And it would be nice to snare a KP-sized full back, to free up Leo to also provide more run from the back.

I think we do evolve and that's why we're premiers. We can play a running, flowing game as well as the midfield maul. Our skill at stoppages saw us win against Geelong and I think we have an adaptable team. We can run from defence and score goals on the burst. We can scrap, snap and score. We can handball or kick the thing from end to end. We can also be indecisive, over use it and kick and hope. Should we evolve? Definitely. Will we? Based on the past two years, I believe so. That Roos bloke, he's good. Very bloody good.

Agree. We've gone from too loose to too tight towards a more open game again. The team should now have a lot of self belief and be able to go for it whenever opportunity presents (or they create it) like the last Saints quarter and the Lions R20 game. The Swans have shown they can outplay the best teams in the competition so we can no longer say other teams (or players) are better. If the Swans' skills and kicking match the team belief we could see some very good games in 2006.

Do you mean accuracy or increase the number of scoring shots or just the number of goals plain and simple? Looking back at some of our games this year the accuracy and number of behinds was a shocker. If we have the forwards coming out a long way and to the sides, that will bring the accuracy down. From what I have read on RWO, Magic's hammies bring his accuracy down anywhere outside 40m. Rhino seems to be a confidance player, as is Schneider. Baz is solid generally and Davis has a sweet boot.

I think the number of scoring shots is more important.

Bringing it up the middle rather than around the outside will help with accuracy.

Combine these two things and suddenly we start scoring a decent number of goals.

i reckon now that we've won a flag the players (Roosy obviously too) might be prepared to take a few risks and play some more attacking footy. our defence is already working well so i cant see that changing much but we need to get more inside 50's and utilise our forwards that little bit better

hopefully guys like malceski and mcveigh can take the next step and be guns in the midfield and be on the end of the hardball from the likes of kirky and j bolton

I reckon it's just about tweaking the balance between the 'lock-down' periods of the game and the "blitz" periods.

In the final third of the season the Swans showed their ability to kick goals in a hurry for limited periods. It was what they were doing back in 2003 too. Few other teams seem to have the ability to go on a blitz quite as productively as the Swans when the mood hits them.

These periods must be physically taxing, even more so than the pressurised footy played for the rest of the game so we can't expect them to do it for the whole game - just slightly more often.

Open the game up a bit more. More Attacking, we have the forward line to kick big scores, so let them go for it.

as he gets older i expect hall to move further back towards the goal square and be full forward more often. That would change the shape of the game plan.

We have to make some changes over time, but if we continue to apply the same spirit and hard work we can be successful.

The game is quite simple get the red thing and kick it through the posts more than the other team, can spend too much time on game plans and tactics (i know they are important). Look at the dockers under neesham
