Picks can be deceiving, could never believe how high Warfe went !
Davis was a Father/Son selection by Collingwood. We took Health James as our Father/Son selection in the same draft. Each costs a second round pick. Ours was 2Xth, theirs was 19th.

Their first pick was 3rd which they gave us in exchange for Orchard, Licuria and our first pick.

Why not a dual premiership ruckman, six years younger that we can get cheaper?

Thing to remember with Nick is that the father/son rules of the time dictated that he would be pick 19. That was the 1998 draft - no team had priority picks from memory, and Collingwood must have finished 14th. In '98, an f/s pick had to be a 2nd rounder. So Nick could have gone anywhere from 17 to 32, depending on where the Pies finished that year.

Of course, what should also be taken into consideration is that he was clearly one of the best talents in that draft, and we would have looked closely at him in the top ten if we had had the chance. At least, you'd hope so - missing Hayes was bad enough, but Nick had even spent a lot of time around the club as a kid.

If the deal is 1st round pick + Saddo. I'd keep Saddo and Doyle.
If its Saddo + 2nd or 3rd rounder for him, then worth the risk.

Just my humble opinion. Who's to say Doyle cant put in a full year as 2nd ruck.
          LOL.

You'd veto Everitt for fear of injuries, whilst planning to rely on... Doyle?

Is this news or simply a statement that you'd like to have him?

Given the ruckmen that are on offer or putting thier hand up he is a good deal.

He has baggage in Melb that he wants to get rid of Sydnay can offer him that. I would bet that BBB and Spida would be best of mates on and off field.

In the mean time Jolly is developed as the no 1 ruck in 2 or so year under the wing of spida.

Ok. A couple of points that seem to be missing in the 10 pages written so far:

                    1. We dont know if ROK *wants* to stay or not. It may be that he was always planning to go back to Vic when this contract finished, or when we finally won a premiership - with both happening at the same time, it could be perfect timing. Rather like Tadgh. The reason this *may* not have been made public is because he is a high profile player, and is willing to stay if the right home is not available.
                    2. Despite all of the commentary on TV, have we heard anything directly from Spider yet? If not, are we still not a little premature?
                    3. If we have a coaching and recruitment staff who got us a flag so far, are they not trustworthy enough to make the right decision yet again with regard to exactly who we get for the ruck, and who/what we lose to get them? Seems to me that Rick, Paul and Andrew have done pretty darn good so far over the last three years, and I suggest the form is not accidental.

Most draft 'experts' at the time expected Davis would be top 10, even 5. Had he been available to Sydney he would surely have been taken by them. The most surprising thing about that draft was opting for Fosdike ahead of Hayes. Jude Bolton, another non Sydney boy also went before him but he was highly touted before the 98 draft as a definite top 10 pick.

Rumours that O'Keefe might want to return to Victoria have been abounding for years. I had quite a long chat with him at a club function midway through last year and asked him about this. He looked bemused at the suggestion, stating that he loves it in Sydney.

Of course things might have changed since then but you'd have to think it would be unlikely, given what they've been hrough together to win a premiership.

He is, however, within his rights to expect a decent pay hike in his next contract. Last time he signed he was still establishing himself as a regular in the senior team. Now he's well and truly arrived and should be entering the peak period of his career. If his manager is not trying to make sure he is well looked after financially, he should be sacking his manager. Fortunately for us, it doesn't sound like the salary cap is much of an issue right now.

I'd be very dubious about him wanting to leave at all. It's just that he has yet to sign. But in 2003 there were similar rumours re ROK and when I asked him he was really upset and asked if we knew something he didn't. While we were talking three other people came up and asked if he was leaving. Suggest it often enough and eventually it could become self fulfilling.

Personally, considering their respective ages and chances to develop, I would not trade ROK for Spida. We'd just have to find another ruckman (esp if it's true that we have suggested to Doyle that he should look elsewhere). ROK and Baz are our immediate tall forward future - esp as Magic gets older. Spida is an easy fix for next year - but I don't want the Swans playing against a booming ROK in 2008 or 2010. Even Leigh Matthews has praised his game and potential.

On the other hand, Saddo or McVeigh (Spriggs?) - then let's talk.

Your observation is a good one Charlie. I recall a lot of folks being mighty annoyed about the f/s rule when Collingwood were able to get Nick with a 2nd round draft pick. He would almost certainly have been high top ten.
I knew him as a gentle young man, I cannot say for sure the reasons for his decline
We watched him fade before our very eyes, and years before his time

Spida wants to end career as Swan

I can't remember what Hawthorn traded to get Spida - but already the price seems to be too high - we should probably move on.

Is a 31 YO worth that much?

Is it worth risking the fabric of the club (trading players), I doubt it
