Troy Luff Medal - Rounds 15 and 16

Welcome to the eighth instalment of the Troy Luff Medal for 2005! Tonight, we look at two games that, for me, stamped the Swans as Premiership contenders; the round 15 smashing of Geelong, and the similarly impressive away victory over Melbourne. Before we do so, however, let's have another look at the vote tally:
    32- Jude Bolton
26 - Craig Bolton, Brett Kirk
    21 - Adam Goodes
    15 - Barry Hall
    14 - Leo Barry
    13 - Paul Williams
    11 - Luke Ablett
    9 - Darren Jolly
    8 - Nick Davis, Ryan O'Keefe
7 - Michael O'Loughlin, Amon Buchanan, Tadhg Kennelly
    4 - Nic Fosdike
    3 - Jared Crouch
2 - David Spriggs, Luke Vogels
    1 - Jarrad McVeigh

The Cats arrived in Sydney in round 15 a mere shadow of the team that had looked so strong early in the year. They were missing half of their best 22, while the Swans were missing only Adam Schneider and Paul Bevan from our Premiership side. Sydney showed no mercy to the young Cats, however, with stunning nine-goal second quarter that seemingly put the game beyond doubt. Apart from a brief rally in the third term, the Swans controlled the rest of the match to coast to a 54-point win. Barry Hall and Ryan O'Keefe dominated with eight goals between them, and Brett Kirk, Adam Goodes and Amon Buchanan were busy in the middle.

    Round 15 votes:
    5. Amon Buchanan
    4. Adam Goodes
    3. Ryan O'Keefe
    2. Barry Hall
    1. Craig Bolton

Congratulations to all five players, particularly Amon Buchanan who achieves his first ever five vote performance.

The next week, the Swans headed to Melbourne for the fourth time in seven rounds, to play the Demons at Docklands. Melbourne had started the season in brilliant form, but had slumped to three straight losses by round 16. There was more pain to come for Dees fans. Led by stand-in captain Adam Goodes and Barry Hall (who kicked seven goals), the Swans controlled most of the game. With only David Neitz (six goals) causing severe headaches for Paul Roos, the Swans set up a 26-point win with a six goal third quarter.

    The votes:
    5. Barry Hall
    4. Craig Bolton
    4. Adam Goodes
    2. Amon Buchanan
    1. Brett Kirk

    Congratulations to all five.

So, as we approach the end of the home and away season, Jude and Craig Bolton share top spot. With Brett Kirk and Adam Goodes not far behind, and Barry Hall closing fast, we look set for our closest Troy Luff Medal ever. The tally:
    32 - Jude Bolton
    31 - Craig Bolton
    29 - Adam Goodes
    27 - Brett Kirk
    22 - Barry Hall
14 - Amon Buchanan, Leo Barry
    13 - Paul Williams
    11 - Luke Ablett, Ryan O'Keefe
    9 - Darren Jolly
    8 - Nick Davis
    7 - Michael O'Loughlin, Tadhg Kennelly
    4 - Nic Fosdike
    3 - Jared Crouch
2 - David Spriggs, Luke Vogels
    1 - Jarrad McVeigh

Join me tomorrow night as we review Sydney's clashes against the top two teams of the home and away season, West Coast and Adelaide.

If B2 wins does he become B1 and B1 become B2?

No, but only to avoid confusing the rest of RWO

He deserves it, though. I think he, Kirk and Hall will make up the top 3 like the B&F - proving once and for all that RWO people know their footy just as well as the coaching staff!

I'm rootin' for Craig Bolton. I would love to see this underated player take the TLM. Leigh Matthews must be kicking himself for letting him go, something he alludes to during the pre match GF talk on Ch 10.

As well as? I think thats how a lot of people on RWO like to delusionally think of themselves.

No 'doubt' about it. Watch the pre match talk on the DVD and hear what Matthews has to say about him.

Cant believe Kennelly has polled so poorly.

If I recall correctly the Melbourne game was where I sat up and took notice of him. I said to my brother, "this bloke has gone to the next level". "He's arrived".

Jason ball had a far better finals series than H&A season.

I think those that dont think he can be replaced sometimes forget that.
