    More twaddle.

    LOL - how, mate?

It was you who singled out Mathews and Fosdike, and obviously not in that single sentence you quoted. Have you read your post correctly?
Yes. I singled out Fosdike and Mathews as the two mature-aged midfielders that are most likely to be squeezed out by younger players. If you think that isn't sufficiently loyal to them, so be it. But I ask you - whose position is less secure than theirs? Kirk? Bolton? Crouch? Goodes?

And I think your premise is specious. There is no reason why recruiting young midfielders in 2005 will result in us dumping premiership players in 2006. Other than a jaundiced opinion of Mathews and Fosdike, that is. [/B]
Actually, recruiting more young midfielders has only an incidental relevance to this argument, which I again emphasise is remarkably simple. If we are fortunate enough that a number of our young midfielders develop into good footballers next year, there is going to be pressure for spots. If that pressure for spots results in Fosdike and Mathews not getting as many chances as they'd like, they can be expected to seek more opportunities elsewhere. What part of that is so hard to understand?

I agree, it certainly seems a bit soon to be writing McVeigh off at 20yo?

Especially since he only missed out on playing in the finals by a hair's breadth.

Let's face it, on form going into the finals, Schneider and Bevan could easily have been replaced by Malceski and McVeigh without raising any eyebrows.
I'm not writing off McVeigh either. But again, let's face facts. There are eight midfielders under the age of 23 - Schneider, Dempster, Bevan, McVeigh, Malceski, Moore, Willoughby and Schmidt - that are all AFL-ready. At the moment, there's only three spots for them.

Either older midfielders make way (such as, dare I say it, Fosdike and Mathews) or younger midfielders get squeezed out due to lack of opportunities. Again, not that hard to understand. Unless you are looking for attitudes that just aren't there.

Dempster is not a midfielder. He is a tall, athletic type who could hold down a key defensive position.

You reckon? To me, he is a classical 70s-style wingman. Fairly tall, fast and with a long, accurate kick.

              I got it from here:

I thought he played alright down back this year though.

No doubt he can play in defence as well - but he and Malceski are the best young options on the wing. Kennelly would be better than either of them, but the plan for him appears to be the HBF for the forseeable future.

and in positions which they a) weren't drafted to the club for and b) use to playing on a solid regular basis.

To think that these two are the answer to our lack of height down back if we get hit by injuries (touch wood) is a major worry, but alas some people just are never willing to put their necks on the line and go against something the club does.

If anyone is interested, Colin Wisbey has posted profiles on Kristin Thornton and Ryan Brabazon:

Geez, that sure is something. I feel like I know them better than my own family now. And I feel very optimistic about Thornton (if only we could find a spot for him!).

Yep - Wisbey compared him very favourably to Ellis. If Kristin (his parents must have spelt 'Kristian' wrong on his birth certificate, surely) is half as good as Ellis is being hyped up to be, we've got ourselves a bargain.

                          Is there a Laidlaw profile?

I haven't seen one, but I think he only started posting them today so he might post a profile on Laidlaw later (someone could specifically ask for one though)

How the @@@@ does this bloke know all this stuff? Does he watch every player in every game? How is this possible?
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.

There was a game when he was put on the ball for a quarter and impressed me with his ability to read the centre bounce.

A few centimetres short of a KPP for mine.
