Must admit I wish here in Sydney we got a chance to have a family day. We used to get the old Barassi's BBQ thing, but that died about 3 years ago (possibly longer?). The only real family day since, as has been mentioned, was the day after the Grand Final, and a lot of die-hard Sydney supporters were unable to make it - either on the plane or the road back to Sydney. We got a ticketape parade, but there was nothing personal about that, and unless you could fork out the money for things like Best and Fairest, there really hasn't been much other opportunity to meet and greet really.

The magic number is 6 public appearances per player, per club.

For what it's worth, I think the Swans do more public appearances (and are in bigger demand) than most Victorian clubs players.
Every footy club/league in NSW is on to the Swans to come out and do appearances/clinic's ad nauseum. It's just not possible.
When Geelong did their community camp up here, a player commented to me that they strictly stick to the 6 appearances at their club around the Geelong area.
When I was talking to a couple of high profile senior players at the Swans, they were saying that it got to the point that it was one per week for some of the high profile players, and that's not including media interviews/committments, and they could be asked to go anywhere in the state.

All grassroots footy clubs/ fans would love to have their heroes accessable to them whenever they wanted it, but I think we need to remember that they are employees of their respective clubs and need to make sure they complete their work (i.e train & prepare) or they will end up unemployed.

Even though I didn't enjoy yesterday as much as in the past I just thought I'd better add that it was still better than anything I ever attended when I lived in Sydney. We actually have been spoilt in Melbourne as numbers are lower and it is more personal. The Melbourne office is very helpful and easy to deal with. When I have had to ring Sydney they are not at all friendly or helpful. Also, as someone has already mentioned, the aftermatches here have nearly all the players present - so it is not quantity, but quality.

The family day last year was so much better. It was also a bit different being at a different oval. I expected twice as many people. I already knew before the family day that Brett Kirk and Barry Hall weren't going. That was a disappointment. Same goes for Leo Barry. The wind was awful too. I had photos with Ryano and got him to sign my banner, so that was all good. When I was in queue to see him, 3 hussies in front with Ryan had a big banner that said "RYAN O'KEEFE IS SEXY" and I just rolled my eyes. When they departed the tent, I could sense Ryan's sigh of relief that they were gone.

Does anyone remember the family day a few years ago ? We hired out (melbournes) luna park and all the players were there wandering around for you to have a chat with. Not stuck inside a tent for you to queue for an hour outside of before paying money because you have the audacity to want a photo with a player.

I just feel that as a melbourne based supporter, club member and cheer squad member we are getting royally screwed! We're lucky to see our team play 5 or 6 times a year, even then we usually get 2 maximum 3 after match functions where we can actually talk to our players live. IT JUST SUCKS !

I disagree, one could argue now that Jude Bolton Ryan O'Keefe are "big" name players in their own right, so I think it was good that both these players attended. As muted before by others, comes down to Collective Bargening Agreement and the number of times a players has attended a funtion.

This to (5-6 games in Melb.), I am sorry is not a valid arguement. For better or worse, the Swans are now the "Sydney Swans" who have a fantastic Sth Melbourne heritage that I think the club is increasingly embracing. Majority of home games should and will be played in Sydney with the away games shared as they are by THE AFL...the swans request more Melbourne games but it is the AFL that dictates the draw. I think 5-6 Melb. games is a fair result.

Why react like this over one incident (not joining the cheersquad or club)? You have said how loyal you have been over the years, so keep it going.

Writing a letter is a better way to air your grievences.

If you're still unhappy, direct your correspondence to Tony Morwood in the Melbourne office, expressing your dissatisfaction. I would have thought it would have occurred to you that Paul Roos would have little to do with arranging functions.

I enjoyed the day, I didn't expect many players there, we don't normally get many players to these events. I was disappointed with the number of supporters, we had a lot more two years ago at the first December family day.
Have you heard of the clubs that actually charge you to have your photo taken with the Premiership Cup? I believe Essendon used to do it!
I certainly don't believe the statement of this heading.
Have you ever been to an aftermatch in Sydney? Compare that to the great aftermatch functions we have in Melbourne, where just about every player attends.
At least they have stopped making as pay to attend the family days, the last pre season one I went to was at Port Melbourne cost me $10 to get in to see half a dozen players and pay footy prices for food. I felt in those days and the Luna Park days we were certainly ripped off!
melb_swan012 - I hope you have done the right thing and contacted the Melbourne office. Even though they would not have control over which players attend (and they never broke any promises in regard to player attendance either) I'm sure they would like to know what we think of things that they organise.
I have personally congratulated them for their work this season, I think Tony and the girls do a wonderful job.

The girls in the Melbourne office are lovely, helpful and always friendly. I'd much rather deal with them than their Sydney colleagues: not that there's anything wrong with them, but the Melbourne girls are especially lovely.

Quit whinging. Melbourne fans are lucky to get what they get, and are no worse off than their Sydney counterparts. I went to the Swans day at the AFL Hall of Fame earlier in the year, and virtually the whole team was in attendance. I've never seen that kind of player turnout at promo events in Sydney.
