    Swans record a small profit

i'd be interested in knowing what the cost/benefit has been on the premiership. There are extra costs associated in playing 4 finals, e.g airfares, player payments but the benefits of merchandise etc

Hopefully the real $ impact is on memberships and sponsorships for years to come

I don't understand why the clubs should have to pay for travel costs, it should be up to the league to pay for all clubs to travel IMO.

I think the AFL pays for travel.

So what are the extra costs then? Or is it that the AFL pay for basics and any extras are club responsibility?

That's a very disappointing figure for a premiership year.

Hawthorn never made much money as a premier.

I don't know the exact details, but the club would pay for most other stuff.

At the risk of once again being a lone voice in support of Colless on here, wrong, Charlie, wrong.

Yes, we got the $$$ for playing in some finals matches. But think back to halfway through the season when we were floating at the edge of the eight. Crowds at the SCG were low-to-mid 20s and all that comes with it . . . merchandising, other sales, etc, etc.

The worry will be if we don't make big bucks next year with sponsorship, merchandising, membership and other kicks that will only come off the back of a flag and at the start of a new season.

The club gets a payment for each final (plus travel I think) but Colless said that barely covers the extra costs (player/staff payments etc).

The real Premiership revenues will be in 2006 (and hopefully beyond)

It's actually a very good result given our average financial position in mid 2005.

There is a significant lag between winning a premiership and cashing in on the benefits. 6 months minimum.

There are significant costs around winning a premiership, incuding those mentioned and very big bonuses to the likes of coaches and players for winning a premiership.

It will have an impact on the 2006 result though.

Good result, although not really interested in the profit result as that is dependent on accounting methods and whether we are willing to screw expenses down to make a decent profit.

The figure of interest is the $28 Million for revenue generated. If we are going to remain compertitive and a viable club we need to be able to consistently grow our revenue base. We should see a healthy increase revenue wise this year post premeirship.

I would be interested to know how we compete revenue generation wise compared to the rest of the comp, anyone know?

Port made a profit of $332K in their premiership year and lost $515K in 2005.

Essendon made a profit of $806K in 2005 on $28m revenue.

If you want some details see: http://www.essendonfc.com.au/club/finreport2005.pdf

There is also an overview of club revenues in 2004 here to allow some more comparisons.

These comparisons are interesting, but they are not really appropriate as the Sydney sports market is so unique, espec with us as the only AFL team.

The only apples with apples comapison is probably Vic-based clubs.

Yep - comparing against other clubs in other states is always difficult, even when looking across traditional football states.

I think there is an allowance for teams to pay finals bonuses to players under the salary cap. This could account for some of the potential profit.
