Back to topic, what's with this 'sick of the premiership' crap? I'm guessing there's no Swans supporter here that has experienced one prior to 2005, unless they've snuck in some laptops to an old folks home.

They don't come around real often (even if you're fortunate enough to barrack for Carlton ) so when they do come savour every minute.

Not many of us are over it, just some silly old cow.

They didn't say greatest Grand Final victory, they said greatest sporting moment. Breaking a 72 year drought is a pretty big deal even if the actual game wasn't as good as the 1970 game.

No-one even nominated it, so how could it be on the list. It was up to listeners to nominate, obviously that was too hard for Carlton supporters to do, because it wasn't nominated.

BTW its debatable that that was the greatest GF ever, most people would nominate Hawthorn against Geelong when Ablett nearly beat the Hawks single handed. Also, the competition was "25 Greatest Sporting Moments" not greatest GF's. Next time check your facts before blowing your own trumpet about Carlton on here.

My apologies, I wasn't aware that this was some radio vote in.

As for not holding the 70 GF in high regard, it confirms what the rest of the league thinks about Swans supporters.

They know heaps about the Swans, but little about the game.

PS - the 89 GF was a humdinger. It's a close second to 70 for mine. Even the 84 GF, won by filthy Essendon I rate higher than 2005.

PPS - Not trying to slag off you guys - it was a gutsy, well-deserved win. I just don't reckon it will be remembered as fondly by the broader footballing populace.

PPPS - Barry's mark is the the best I've seen in my lifetime.

I guess the freshness of it in people's minds plays a big factor. Again, I didn't realise it was a (small slice of the) public's vote.

I'm sure there were some kickarse Ashes tests in the 1920's, and VFL grand finals too - not many people around to tell us how good they were but.

Cricket in the 1920s and 1930s captured the imagination more so than now but like football of days gone by is nowhere near the standard of the present day. Skills were not as good, fitness nowhere near what it is today and conditions were ordinary. The facilities for spectators were poor but there was more atmosphere. The Swans grand final win this year was much more like the days of old, when 100 points was something to behold, when teams played more like mates than highly paid professionals. The grand final just gone was a marvellous slog between two the two sides with the most heart in the VFL. Unlike the cricketers of the present time. Over paid and over rated. They need some heart. Roll on the Swans in 2006.

Spot on! (Even though I was born a year after the Swans moved north!) The low scores were due to the intense pressure that was applied by both teams, and the fact that they were so evenly matched, in the end. That's why I think the Swans' premiership came in at #6 on the ABC poll, because like you said, sport being played in this way captures the imagination more.

Pretty silly argument, considering that you are addressing it to a life long Swans supporter who was probably attending games before you were born. I have attended about 8 GFs and been a member of South Melbourne and the Sydney Swans.

If you happen to look at threads like the draft thread, and the comments on rules in here then you may realise how foolish your comments can make you look.

I also notice that you changed your wording from "hold in awe" to "hold in high regard", the two phrases are completely different. I hold every GF in high regard, but to hold one in awe is usually reserved for supporters of the winning team.

Yep - the freshness was a huge factor. The tied test in 1961 (?) between Australia and West Indies should have been higher, but it's not recalled by as many now.

There seems to be a view on this site that an intense game must produce low scores and correspondingly a game with high scores can't have much pressure. That's simply wrong, as so many games will bear out, both in current times and in the past.
