Valuable input to Roos and Players

I believe that there is some good posting on this RWO generally, could someone, maybe Bron, put the comments good and bagging ones together and send to the Swans - attention Paul Roos.

Paul was quoted in an article last week in the paper saying the Swans are shielded from bagging etc here in Sydney. He asked them to read the papers, get on the net etc - so don't just have all our feelings here - good and bad should be put together and pasted on the Swans board. - How they didn't play well, how they handballed to the opposition - how they kicked backwards and the ball was intercepted. A collage of comments pasted together and forwarded for the teams perusal - don't let them be protected as Roos says. They should know how we feel - especially considering the numbers that travelled to Canberra and obviously far outweighed the North supporters etc. - they have support but should also have criticism.

Letting the players and coach know how you feel is one thing.

Thinking it is valuable input is another.

If Roos is praised for not dagging players after making mistakes to give them the opportunity to redeem themselves, then please don't think we should be telling them how they handballed, kicked backwards etc.

We are all armchair coaches on this board which is fine, but lets keep it to this board

Jeez, some of them still believe they had a role in getting Roos the job. Now they want to provide feedback to the players.

Maybe what Roosy really wants is the players to lighten up a bit. Have a laugh. If they read some of the garbage posted here about them, they will all need treatment for stitches.

Input can be useful - maybe you should read the article in last week's telegraph and what Roos said.

Other inputs can be destructive. I think the players know what they are doing wrong without "armchair coaches" cluttering up their headspace with egotistical outpourings, such as some of the input into this site.

Do you want them to become totally demoralised???

I doubt there are many insights here that the coaches have missed, however it would be nice to know that the players are aware of our hopes, joys and disappointments.

I would not be prepared to send "bagging" stuff to the Club. I reckon that they know how they played. I'm sure they read the Australian. The article in there today ... well the first paragraph said it all!

For those who do want to give feedback ....

1. I have no idea if email gets read - only once have I received a response to an email and that was in response to a thank you that I sent to Paul Roos.

2. I have no idea what happens to faxes. I have sent several and not had a response. I have sent faxes when I have been furious with a game or felt I needed to pass something on (e.g. Gemma's article earlier this year).

3. I generally send a congratulations card (snail mail) to players who I think do well each week. I try to make some specific comments about how the played, what I thought that they did well. Several of them have commented to me that they appreciated the cards, so clearly these get through. Similarly, I send thank you cards to all players/coaches who come to the after matches. I come from the encouragement school and figure you get more from people by giving encouragement than paying them out (particularly when they know how they've gone and there are lots of others happy to criticise). I have no idea if the players are just being polite or if they do appreciate the cards ... they don't actually need to say anything, so I figure it's a positive reaction. Also, it makes me feel like I can contribute something positive. As has been said, they don't need my guidance in what they've done wrong, I do like to think that someone who takes the time to write personal notes shows that they appreciate what they are doing.

4. I have printed off particular threads here and sent these (snail mail) to players - generally I let you know that I'm going to do this and it's to acknowledge a player.

I always give RWO a plug when I talk to players. I know that several read us (not sure how often) now that they know of RWO. When I chat to players at functions to do my reports, I always wave my notes and say I'm from RWO.

People at the Club do read RWO. I know that Sue in reception does, as does Paul Grzanka. He has called me a couple of times in response to posts/discussions going on here. I am always happy to pass comment on both ways. I am not happy to pay out players on behalf of anyone else .... I figure that's why Roos has a job (amongst a great many other things) and they're all smart enough to know that they've played badly.

Anyway, whilst I was disappointed yesterday, I wasn't devastated. They were dejected. They also did pretty well to contain the Roos within 4 goals given how badly they played! It could have been a massacre!

While I agree with Jan's general point about players not being "shielded", I'm not sure that sending posts to the club is the way to go about it. They're big boys, and I do assume they read the papers. If they're fair dinkum about their footy, they should already know if they played badly, and be itching to run out next week and make up for it.

We've seen the best and worst of this side already this season Rollercoaster ride? You betcha.

That would make them different to the Swans I have followed in the past then!!

Well, I've seen some brave new things in this team so far this season!!! Last year's model would have folded against Collingwood, Brisbane and maybe even Geelong.... We'll see.

I hope we'll see a difference to previous, but I'm not convinced. The problem is that I believe Roos is absolutely correct. Having come from Melbourne where footy is in your face every single day ofthe week and every little thing is scrutinised and players can't possibly escape it, the Sydney guys have it relatively easy up here. It's rarely in the papers or on TV, only a little talk, and not much negative press. If things aren't going well, then rather than the microscopes coming out, people just stop going and lose interest.
