goodes vs dempster - the official site states that dempster is 191cm, which is the same as what the official site says about goodes... so maybe dempster is 194cm

that would be weird, to recruit a player as a midfielder and develop him into a KPP... what was goodes recruited as?

Dempster was recruited as a tallish midfielder who could pinch hit in a key position - along the lines of C. Bolton
Goodes played CHF and CHB at U18 level

My Melbourne Sources reckon that Dempster was a "steal" as a 2nd round draft pick under F/S rule.

Has the body to be able to play maybe a bit later this year.

remember Goodes played all '98 in the Magoos and then won the Rising Star the next year.

He could be something special in the future

We are 8/4 at the break and a thread like this gets thrown up.

I'm enjoying the season like most Swans supporters, so right now who cares who is going at the end of the season. These threads are for seasons end when it has some relevence.

I am enthusastic about the prospects of Dempster - it wont hurt him to have a year in the reserves, but I'd love to see him in action.
I noticed before the draft that a lot of the papers said the Swans got a pretty good deal by picking him up under the F/S rule

Good comments Nico, we can't think about giving blokes the arse until the season has finished. With the exception of Frosty of course, he may go now if he pleases.

We must remember that there are still 10 weeks to go until the end of the season, a long time in which the players listed here can prove their worth to the club. Thanks Nico for posting a very valid point.

Very true... but a bit of idle speculation can't really hurt. We have no say anyhow.

FWIW - not very much - this is my rough draft...

                  Retire
                  Cresswell

                  Delist/trade
                  McPherson
                  Stevens
                  Ablett
                  Nicks
                  Buchanan
Warfe (but if he continues his very gradual improvement, who knows)

I'm inclined to give Seymour another year to overcome injuries... assuming he doesn't get back for any meaningful portion of 2003.

Meiklejohn will be elevated, and if a miracle occurs so will Heath James. To have persisted for 5 years... the Swans appear to know of something about Heath that is worth bottling.

A bit harsh on buchanan this time last year he was the flavour of the month. Maybe if he had not broken his ankle we would be talking his praises up rather than schneider

                    to go cresswell retire

                    Mcpherson delist
                    Nicks trade

                    Warfe

and maybe one other player in a trade

Could not see anymore than 5 delistings trades with our young list

nicks (throw in to make deal sweeter)
stevens (give him a run somewhere else, WA)
buchanan and ablett and 5th round pick(for playfair (Charlie, )
mathews, schauble and fosdike (possible trade bait )

                      who would u?
I would keep Cresswell definately if he can play another season, and possibilities of Warfe and Seymour if they are fit, (otherwise maybe they should retire), and delist McPherson. Nicks could be a possible trade. If we don't get an experienced tall defender we should keep Schauble. Why trade Fosdike and Matthews when they are playing the best football of their career?
Ablett and Buchanan don't seem to be up to AFL standard. Stevens I would like to keep for another year just to see if he gets stronger. At the moment he's being pushed out of contests.

He's already announced his retirement at the end of this season. And his Kingsford house is up for sale.

Isn't everyone being a bit rough on Buchannan?

He's similar to Schneider, he's still young, can really play, he's had injuries.

Give the bloke a go, he'll be right.

I was thinking, the best deal for us would be trading Stevens + a pick for a quality young midfielder from a stable of young midfielders like the Hawks or Geelong.

Geelong would be the most likely candidate. They need KPs and have plenty of young midfielders.

The rest would command very little trade value. Perhaps, keeping Warfe as a depth player. We need to shift Nicks out. He got a bit of attitude problem. At least, we could not question Warfe's commitment.

                                McPherson is a goner.

Jury is still out on Albett and Buchanan. I am a bit unease with the group of Albett, Buchanan, Malceski and Thewlis. So far, there is no report of any standout attribute from this group. I would love to see both Albett and Buchanan a last chance to see if they got anything to offer.

Either way, if we could entice a good young midfielder (Bartel?)with Stevens and a pick (say second pick) and picking a good youngster with our first pick, I would be more than happy.

BTW, do anyone know if any F/Ss are in the line for us in the next couple of years.
