have a go, macleski and thewlis were drafted last year! youre writing them off already, thats pretty tough... in the preseason game against carlton, mckay was put on macleski to shut down his influence on the game, coz he was ripping them up... thats pretty good for like his third game in R&W...

You've hit the nail on the head P46, although not in the way you think. Schneider has been SO impressive this year... he's almost ended any thoughts of Bucky making it with the Swans. How any team could justify having TWO ~175cm not-overly-quick players in the team I just don't know.

I'd like to trade Amon to a team like Geelong or the Bulldogs, where I'm sure he'll get a good chance to show what he's got. But he's fallen way behind Adam Schneider in a race where you're either a winner or a loser.

Malceski and Thewlis will both be very good players for the club IMO. So will McVeigh and Dempster, and so will Schneider, Lewis Roberts-Thompson and Powell... it's enough to make you drool!

For some idea on how the club might be thinking, check out this article.

In particular, this quote from Ireland gives an idea of possible turnover of the list

"You have to take three players but we'll probably take between six and nine players from the under-18 championships. It's about securing young quality players for the future who might play in a premiership in a couple of years."

We have one place free on the list at the moment, and assuming Cressa sticks with his plan to retire and Frosty makes way, as seems likely, that still means that at least 3 more players leave and up to maybe 6. The rookie list complicates things somewhat, both in that some of the existing rookies might be promoted, suggested greater senior list turnover, but also that 6-9 players quoted probably includes a handful who will go onto next year's rookie list.

I think that 7-8 players will come off the list, assuming that there aren't any major improvements like that shown by Kirky last year:
              Seymour
              Cresswell
              McPherson
              Stevens
              Ablett
              Nicks
              Buchanan
              Warfe (MAYBE)

Right or wrong... that's just what I see happening. I also see Meiklejohn being promoted full-time - no point playing him if he's not expected to be around for longer. That leaves, all up, 6-7 spaces to fill. I'm hoping like hell that two of them are Lennie Hayes and Henry Playfair, and that one of them ISN'T Aker. So... that leaves 4 or 5 draft choices... which is enough.

the expense it would take to get aker could be transferred to hayes and have a better option for long term!!!

I don't think he's out of contract... but the question is how sweet can we make the deal for St Kilda? Would you be willing to part with Saddo? I'd give it some serious thought.

As for Hayes... with Reiwoldt, Ball, Goddard, Koschitze and Hamill there with him... someone isn't going to be getting the $400k+... perhaps a combination of money, the potential for a premiership in the next two years (I know this also exists at St K) and the go-home factor could pull him away.

Of course... if he is out of contract... YES YES YES. We could send Stevens and Nicks to Carlton... who want to get rid of McKernan. McK goes to the Saints, who will want some extra height... we send our 2nd rounder to the Saints as well.. and Lennie comes to us.

It's all hypothetical - I don't think Hayes will be going anywhere in the near future - but I'd happily give up Saddington for him. Not sure that would be enough on its own but it would be a good start. I like Saddo and think he's an important part of our side but I wonder whether he'll ever really be a key position player so losing him wouldn't decimate our structure.

Hayes, on the other hand, looks like he's going to be one of the top half dozen midfielders for the next half decade at least. I know midfielders are far more plentiful than quality tall players but ones like Lenny don't grow on trees.

Oh well, it's nice to dream!

They could all be some dependable players but I am asking a bit more. The last thing, we want is to add four kids to the team who could all be just dependable players but not more. If we follow this road, we will pay later down the track.

give em a freakin go! look how long it has taken for jude to hit his straps and there is still PLENTY of room for improvement... u cant expect overnight stars... they are very rare, goodes is another case similar to jude and goodes isnt anywhere near his potential... i think u cant write off a footballer til they are about 24-25, not 17!

Can't we have this demoralising chatter

After the year is over? The players proabably sat down on the weekend off and had a net surf and came across this..which would have been sad.

I'm sure the players don't give a toss what we are speculating about.

Louellyn - footballers are public figures... if they don't have a thick skin... they sholdn't be public figures.

                                I honestly think they wouldn't give a rat's.
