For all those fellow fans out there who are still hurting, hang in there. The loss stings, not just for one reason but for hundreds with Carey seeming to be the straw that breaks the camel's back.
I am immune from being too down because I have already hit my lowest ebb - twice.
It took me until February 1997 to stop thinking about the Grand Final loss every five minutes. I was at the game and it was a tough loss to endure.
But for me, rock bottom was Round 19, 2001 against Essendon at the Telstra Dome. We played so bravely and so courageously. Kel kicked into Caracella on 3/4 time and it was all downhill from there. I don't think I will ever endure a more agonising loss. To be the dead carcass over which the Bomber fans were rejoicing, rejoicing a win where they were only in front for the last kick of the game - and to be the victims of Alessio - that was way too much to endure. This was nothing compared to that game.
Maybe it has something to do with the fact that as I get older and maybe ever more wiser, I'm getting less emotional from the game, regardless of the result. I appreciate the contest and the celebration of the game. The way the players fight for the jumper.
Only 10 years ago, we had nothing. Whether we won or not meant nothing because finals was basically fantasy. Now we are competitive week-in, week-out. That is fantastic, considering where we were for so long.
Ultimately a loss is a loss is a loss. Nothing will ever change that.
We played great footy and in the process gained the respect of the football world. We didn't yield four points for our efforts, but no one can tell me that we did not emerge winners.
