According to Neil Cordy on Ch 10 sport, Mark McVeigh is keen to come home. While he definitely has the skills, does he have the hardness that we really need out of a midfielder with Cressa probably hanging up the boots at the end of the season. Also, what/who would we have to give up to get him?

Maybe trade Nicks for him?Bloods

He's had a poor year generally, and so I wouldn't trade much for him. Nicks would be an alright trade from our perspective, not sure whether the Bombers would go for it though.Last edited by ugg; 20 August 2003, 06:23 PM.Comment

M. McVeigh definitely has the hardness for our team -- he's agressive, and probably S&Dons best tackler. Also Lloyd would spew if he left, as many of his marks have come from well-weighted McVeigh passes into the F50. He never seems to over-kick the ball, a bit like Tige in that respect.
The downside could be his endurance, which is nowhere near Cressa levels. He does drift in & out of games at times, which is why he plays mainly at HBF, where his tackling comes in handy. However, we've turned Davis into a running-man, so I don't see why the same can't be done for Mark.
S&Don would want heaps for him though. He wears their (apparently) hallowed #10. I'd offer Nicks and/or Ablett + a low pick. Possibly Fossie? One thing's for sure, the Dons will drive a hard bargain.
However (according to a RWO exclusive), Ryan O'Keefe has also indicated a desire to return home. This would most definitely be a straight swap, but I don't know who would come out ahead. S&Don would probably fully-develop Ryan as a strong-marking forward. We'd have to get Mark pretty fit & very mobile to make up for that loss.Last edited by Red; 20 August 2003, 06:38 PM.To all those people who waited 72 years to see a South Melbourne/Sydney Swans premiership HERE IT IS!!Comment

He's as soft as warm butter. If he wants to come, he better hope that Essendon want Nicks, because he's about as much as I'd want to pay for McVeigh. We hate Anthony Rocca
We hate Shannon Grant too
We hate scumbag Gaspar
But Leo WE LOVE YOU!Comment

I love these threads....
Nicks for McVeigh?
There is no way in hell the Bombers would agree to that.
BUT
As seen many a time before, a player who really wants to leave for another club, and is out of contract holds all the aces.
The club either trades for a lesser player, or it's draft time and the club gets nothing.
Even then, I'd say the Bombers would rather throw McVeigh into the draft and get zero than pick up Nicks....The difference between insanity and genius is measured only in success.Comment

There's often been talk around the trap that Sheedy is very keen on Saddington as a player. I like Saddo and think he's oft maligned but don't consider him unexpendable for the right trade, given he doesn't look like he'll ever bulk up enough to be a true KPP. And while he could be a very handy tall flanker or wingman, that's probably one area where we can afford to dip into our reserves, particularly if the likes of Sunny and Dempster are coming on as expected.
Having said that, with our current squad we probably still desparately need to hang onto him, given he can play KPP when he has to.
I certainly hope that the club wouldn't entertain a straight swap of Saddo for McVeigh. And while he (McVeigh) would be a handy pick-up, he's not the type of player we particularly need.Comment

Based on our current drafting policy I don't think Roos will give up any picks for McVeigh. It would have to be a direct swap and I'm not sure if Sheedy would go for too many of the players we'd be prepared to offer."As everyone knows our style of football is defensive and unattractive, and as such I have completely forgotten how to mark or kick over the years" - Brett Kirk

Sheedy would be a mug not to take O'Keefe or Saddington for a go homer who isn't in the best 22 at the moment....can't see anyone else that the Dons would want. What are they looking for at the moment anyway - they've got pretty much all their bases covered, except CHB where they are trialing Lucas. They could use another ruckman, maybe to take over from Allessio, but they can't have any of ours!
I would much rather O'Keefe stays and becomes a Sydney legend, BTW"I'll acknowledge there are more talented teams in the competition but I won't acknowledge that there is a better team in the competition" Paul Roos March 2005Comment

I happen to think Essendon, would be interested in McVeigh for Nicks. People on here forget how good a footballer Nicksy is on his day. And keep in mind, McVeigh is not exactly a worldbeater.
Nicks doesn't fit into our team so well at the moment, but he would probably fit into Essendon's line-up, pretty well.
If we traded O'Keefe instead, I think it would definitely be a loss.Bloods

There is not one Essendon supporter I know who doesn't hate Mark McVeigh.
They seem to blame everything on him. Even when they win!
Good player IMO. young, pace, skills, tough and versitile.
However, Jarrod will be way better from what i've been hearing.Comment
