We're all having fun, what with all the winning games and not having too many terrible games all year and such and such..... But there's something I should probably bring up now, before the end of the year.
As you may know, RWO doesn't stay open for free. It takes money and time to maintain and update the site. Time is not an issue, it is freely donated by volunteers who help update the site, write articles and promote RWO. (thanks must got to all volunteers, btw - you've been bloody great!)
Money is the real problem. It'll cost money to pay for the servers that RWO is hosted on, we need to pay for the software that the forum uses.
How much will it cost?
Web hosting - This costs roughly $350 a year. We are paid up till 10th January, 2004.
vBulletin licence - This year, I opted to go for a 1-year licence of vBulletin, just as a trial. IMHO the software has been a huge success, so I reckon we go for an owned licence, which means we can use it forever (plus about $50 a year if we want to continue receiving software updates). This will cost about $250.
Domain name Registration - I paid this for 2 years, so we'll be right for 2004.
So it's not a HUGE amount of money, but it'll still need to come from somewhere.
Some fund raising ideas:
1) Have another RWO event/function. This year's Trivia night was excellent and a lot of fun, but took a LOT of organising. Kudos to Gemma for doing the bulk of the hard work (and of course the Luffster for hosting it), but I realise how hard it is - I certainly would not expect anyone to just volunteer to run something like this. Also, there is a cost involved in getting prizes, booking a room etc.
2) Auctioning off items. If the club can do it, why can't we?
Basically get some merchandise / memorabilia and get bids on it.
3) Raffles - Instead of doing the auction thing, perhaps a raffle might be the go. The attraction of this is that you can get contributions from MORE people who each pay a smaller amount. ie: instead of one person paying 2-300 dollars for something, 50 people putting in $5 each would get the same result.
4) Getting RWO caps, t-shirts etc made up. I know there's a couple of places where you can get this done. There's even an online t-shirt place where you can upload designs and people can order through them - you then receive any profit over the base price that they set. You might only get $7 or $8 from a $30 t-shirt though.
5) Robbing a bank - This is risky, but offers the greatest returns in terms of money. The downsides are possible long jail terms.
Thoughts, anyone? The other RWO staff and I have discussed this briefly - donations and sponsorship were a couple of other ideas that were floated.. I'm not really comfortable with sponsorship because of the perceived obligation to deliver in terms of advertising, site views, sales etc. I'd rather get help from the RWO community because they know what they're getting.
