    You know what?

I brought him up when all the discussion was going on about the captain last year when Stewie got it.

Back then most people thought he was AT LEAST a consideration.

Has he had an average season?
Perhaps, but he's one of those players who has a job every week, and doesn't always shine.

    he plays in the midfield.
    He doesn't get injured.
He can be vocal and I see him as a leader.

Same as Bron, having met him a couple of times, it comes through in his personality for me.
but then I suppose you could say that for many players.

    Just my opinion......

Fair enough mate. I think Micky would be a great captain but noone seems to even consider him, so I guess it's each to their own.

        He may be OK.

Like last year, I tend not to preach too much.

Only the club insiders truely know who would be a great choice.

        But to speculate....

Micky - Semms to concentrate on his game and that alone to me.

Goodsy - Apparently is quite the listener, taking everything under his hat when criticized. Seems fairly vocal , agood possibility.

Barry Hall - I think he'd be a great captain, for lots of reasons.
He has that passion in his eyes. All players have some sort of passion for their football, be he seems to constantly be desperate to do all he can. Don't like the idea of a FF captain too much, but he does run around the forward 50 a lot.

To be honest no others really spring to mind.

The next round of possibilities should be being groomed now.
The next captain should be a longer term one IMO

The most important characteristic that a "leader" must surely possess is the acknowledgement of ones team mates that he is perceived to have "leadership qualities".

I seem to recall a recent article (was it in the ??SMH??) about Adam Goodes that mentioned that ,when the players were voting on the members of the leadership group, he was shocked to find that he had not been elected.

This suggests to me that, no matter how talented a player AG undoubtably IS, he is not perceived by his team mates to be a "leader".

My vote is for Jude Bolton as FSC. He's a natural.

Of course, that's my opinion only.

I agree with Cure, we were discussing this with friends last year and I put forward Crouch. His work ethic is high, he isn't afraid to step up to a challenge and his commitment to play each and every game is phenominal.

From those listed though I would say Jude.

I thought it was "disappointed" rather than "shocked" but may well be recalling incorrectly. In any case, that same article went on to say how he has now been drawn into the leadership group, so to some degree it's a moot point.

If we had to choose a new captain now and it had to come from the younger group of players, I'd be happy with either B1 or Goodsey. Both seem to be very level headed and determined young men with a sense of responsibility both on and off the field. And both have risen this year in games when they really needed to. Goodes has barely played a mediocre game this year, let alone a bad one, and some of his efforts late in games when he has clearly been tired have been nothing short of sensational. Jude too has risen when he's needed to, and that effort late in the game against Collingwood was a fantastic example of his on-field work ethic.

I'd like to see both of them back up their 2003 seasons with another couple like it before the club has to make a choice. At the start of the year neither was a stand-out as far as the captaincy was concerned IMO, although there were signs of potential there. And of course there's the possibility that another strong candidate will emerge from the group of players just below these two, age wise. But at least the future is looking starting to look brighter from an on-field leadership point of view.

How's the VCE study going Charlie. Are you aiming for a degree in Sydney Swans trivia.

When do you find the time to study, or are you just a genius?????

Mate - that's both stupid and uncalled for... I don't see you attacking Penga, who got to the 1000 posts mark weeks ago... but that's right, I forgot. I'm an easier target. I'm so sorry... I didn't realise that you had to have a low post count to post a poll...

As for VCE - I'm going just fine, thanks. Got distinctions in every subject last semester. Got an A in the exam for my year 12 subject. I'm on target to top my year level this year, and I'll be in scholarship contention next year if I keep this level up. But hey, thanks for your concern. I'll let you know if I start to struggle, eh?

Get back in your box. I don't recall ever attacking you for no reason... so why waste the bandwidth with petty sniping?

Captaincy debate makes me sleepy at this time of night

The one opinion that always confuses me is Crouchy??? As much as there is someone who works fairly hard and I do have a fair amount of respect for him, he just does not have that X Factor (Richie).

I mean is Crouchy going to get better as a player or will he be a run-with player forever?

IMO a captain is one whose improvement inspires along with his already considerable discipline and talent. Crouchy just ain't going to be at that level. If Kel ran around for another 2 years, I guarantee you Maxy (even if he was 2 years younger) would not be skipper, it would have been JB or AG. Both have a profile, charisma, considerable talent and work their rings off.

i reckon its gonna be schneids

seriously though, goodesy and bolton have had a real good year this year... i think maxy will be around for another 2... so, in that time we will be able to tell whether schneids has what it takes, as well as seeing whether or not goodesy and bolton have both stepped up to be consistent performers...

did ya see after the siren for half time, bazza was getting fired up and looked like blowing his top and schneider came in and started pushing him to get his composure back together...

this is a serious, unbiased thought... no, really...

because Stewie has been badly hampered by injury of late...I cannot see him going two more seasons, ergo we should have the 2005 captain lined up and he should be in charge whenever Stewie is injured next year.

That was my line of thinking. I'm by no means writing Maxi off... but if things don't go his way next year, we should have someone ready to step in. I think the 10 man leadership thing has worked this year, but next year we need to name 2 or 3 vice-captains.

"Captain" Kirk seems to ooze leadership qualities as well. Always at the bottom of packs, consistent performer. He'd be my choice.
