Three-time All-Australian defender Justin Leppitsch could have an especially nervous wait before his side meets Sydney in a preliminary final, after AFL umpires boss Jeff Gieschen suggested a collision with Adelaide?s Brett Burton would be scrutinised by the umpires.
Gieschen described Leppitsch?s contact as ?unnecessary?, and said he was surprised it had not sparked comment from the Channel 10 commentary team during the match broadcast.
Leppitsch appeared to drop his knee into Burton during the third quarter of the Lions? 42-point semi-final victory at the Gabba. The video review of matches is done on Mondays after matches by the respective game day umpires, who can chose to lay reports.
?I couldn?t believe watching the broadcast last night that there wasn?t any comment made about the dropping of the knees by Justin Leppitsch into Burton,? Gieschen said on Melbourne radio station 3AW on Saturday.
?I don?t know about it being a deliberate action, it looked an unnecessary action, and certainly it will be something that may get reviewed this week.?
Asked whether he would call Leppitsch to answer for the incident, Gieschen was comparatively coy, before adding that the collision looked worse when replayed in slow motion.
?I would like to look at a few more angles, because I watched it very quickly on the television last night,? he said.
Dual premiership player Leppitsch won his third All-Australian guernsey this year, and is an integral part of the Lions? line-up, particularly due to his capabilities in defence or attack.
