    Barry Hall and free kicks

There is a story on Barry Hall getting on top of his temper this season at the smh ( http://www.smh.com.au/articles/2003/...625158843.html ). The part I found most interesting was a stat... I know that people have been crying about it, and I sit and watch games and think "if that wasn't Barry Hall they would have given him a free"... or conversly "they only gave that free because it was -against- Barry Hall"... but... the stat.... HOW ON EARTH CAN A FORWARD WHO SEES SO MUCH OF THE BALL GO A WHOLE SEASON AND ONLY GET 9 FREE KICKS????????????.

    NINE!

so I looked at Barry's stats for the 23 games this year and you get some crazy stuff... like a marking key forward getting one free kick every 31 disposals... Matthew Lloyd got a free kick every 15 disposals this year...

Well done Barry for sucking it up!

It doesn't seem fair, but Bazza has a reputation with the umpires.

Previous reputations shouldn't come into it at all . An absolute joke . If he was ever going to loose his cool it would've been against the twat, in the game against Melbourne. And these are the fools who decide the Brownlow winner ...
Sit down or i swear to God i'll have you shot.

and... with his "bad boy past".... prior to this year he has averaged a free every 18 disposals... and this year they are making a point he has been -nice-

Gonna have to disagree on this one.
I don't think he plays a style of game that earns him free kicks.
And I also think his style of game offers a lot of frees to other teams.

Nothing wrong with that, so long as he is up around the 60m mark when he give them out, which he is a fair bit.

every time he comes running in at the ball I cringe and wait to see the result.

he hold on to players too long after a tackle.
He doesn't read the play as well as others and generally offends more.

But we need someone like that.
Where is the stat for how manty posessions he gets for us because an opposition player is nervous with BBBB behind him?

I also worry when he is pleading his case for a free in that second after he thinks his free has occured and the play is going on in the background.

These aren't meant as criticisms, more as reasons that I have percieved, and IMO they are a small prce to pay for the benefits of his style of game....

As far as the umps are concerned, Barry doesn't have a back.

could it have something to do with us complaining early on. I don't believe there would have been an actually directive not to award him frees, but one, to be careful that the ones he got were deserved, so the other clubs could not complain we were given advantage as we had gone to the boss. I cringed a little when we did this thinking it may be a disadvantage to us in the long run.

I agree with RW though, regardless of his past and how he has reacted to incidents, if a free is there it should be rewarded regardless of who it is.

Tony Lockett went an entire season getting only ONE free kick.

That was in his come-back year. Mick Martyn pushed him off the exercise bike IIRC.

Even worse was something from that article that said he's only got something like 4 or so since Rd 9 (I'm working off the top of my head - too lazy to look up the exact details )

                          I'm on the Chandwagon!!!
