Swans to trade up for midfielder

Swans to trade up for midfielder
    By Jenny McAsey
    September 22, 2003

SYDNEY are in the market for a top quality midfielder after their dismal final term against Brisbane exposed a soft centre to their bid to be genuine premiership contenders.

Coach Paul Roos gave the team full marks for determination and spirit this year but said the 44-point loss highlighted weaknesses.

"The next day you realise they are probably not as talented as the other teams, but to get to where we have is a fantastic effort. They have given absolutely everything they could," Roos said.

He said the playing list was in good shape with a number of emerging stars such as Adam Goodes, Jude Bolton and Tadhg Kennelly.

However, the priority in the trading period would be to "hit a home run" and try to recruit one of the competition's elite midfielders.

That could put Sydney in the already crowded race for the services of out-of-contract Port Adelaide midfielder Nick Stevens.

While Roos and his players were bitterly disappointed yesterday, they will eventually take consolation from a top-four finish in a season when they were tipped to win the wooden spoon.

The Swans went to the three-quarter time huddle on Saturday night confident of upsetting Brisbane, according to defender Jared Crouch.

"Maybe we were a bit too pumped. We were told to settle down a little bit and think about the basics," Crouch said.

Sydney were only three points down at that stage, but in the last quarter Brisbane's class came to the fore. Their midfield dominated the centre clearances and the result was a return of 6.6 to a solitary behind for Sydney.

"For them to have 12 scoring shots to our one, it was almost our worst quarter for the season," Roos said. "It can only be put down to almost like hitting the wall in the marathon, and 18 blokes all hit it together.

"(But) the club should be proud of the players after we went into the year with financial troubles.

"It is always dangerous to have too many down years in Sydney and the players can take a lot of credit for lifting the club and lifting the profile of the game with two attendances over 70,000.

"They really did play up to their potential across the board, no-one had a poor year."

With that in mind, Roos doesn't want to make radical changes to the playing list.

"If we can get a really top player that is the priority, but if we can't, at least we have bought ourselves a bit of time," he said. "A midfielder is the preference. Obviously we need a big key defender, key forward type, but we showed we can at least cover that. The midfield is an area where you always need to be spot on so that would be a priority.

"My philosophy in the trading period is if we can hit a home run, let's go for it, but if we can't, let's just give the majority of the guys another chance."

Roos said if they couldn't recruit a top-end player he would prefer to nurture the club's current crop of young players.

The finals experience gained this year by the likes of youngsters Adam Schneider, Lewis Roberts-Thomson and Luke Ablett will be invaluable.

"We got a lot of young guys exposed over the last month to some big crowds and some big footy. It's very hard to quantify, but I think it's going to do them a world of good going into next year," Roos said.

Captain Stuart Maxfield was desolate in the rooms on Saturday night, but nonetheless proud of the players.

"It's not a waste because we've learned a lot and we've got a lot of self-belief from this year, but it takes a lot of hard work to get back to that position, so it is a wasted opportunity," Maxfield said.

"The boys have shown a great deal of character and a great deal of heart all year. It has been fantastic to be part of it.

"Once again we showed (that) to fight back into a winning position, but every one of us let ourselves down in the last quarter."

Tough-nut forward Barry Hall was Sydney's best player, continually presenting himself, contesting and creating scoring opportunities amid a flood of Brisbane defenders. He said it was sad that one bad quarter had undermined their season.

"It was disappointing to go down like we did," Hall said. "We'll look at it on paper and say it was a good year. We've learnt a hell of a lot and to play finals is a big stepping stone for the club."

If we had to I guess I would go for Paul Chapman from Geelong

I rate Chappy, always has a go... good honest player. IMHO will never be a star, but will always be there in and under, Cressa-style.

My girlfriend (Cats fan) rates him highly too, which means something as she is normally very hard to please when it comes to Geelong players.

About Nick Stevens.... I doubt that he'll leave Port and if he does we probably don't have a chance, with so many teams after him.

I'm not sure Stevens would be the type we'd look for anyway. He's a very skilfull outside midfielder but we really need someone who can help out Kirky with clearances.

Sammy Mitchell or Mark Coughlan would be ideal - but of course we don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting either of those two.

Probably academic anyway. I doubt whether he will be available to us. His preferred option if hes not stitched up again with Port is to join the pies I believe. He's also an outside centreman, not an in and under type, but he's also quite young still, about 23. Being a receiver shouldn't be a preclusion for us to try for him...
IMO, we do need a gun midfielder, a tough key position backman, AND a tough non-brittle ruckman. These would free up the likes of Saddo, Goodsie, and take some pressure off Schaubs, Leo, Tadgh, and Mathews...
I'm sure Roosie will do the right thing....
"Davis...Davis has kicked 2...he snaps from 40...dont tell me, dont tell me, hes kicked a goal....unbelievable stuff from Nick Davis, can you believe this, he's kicked 3 final quarter goals and Swans are within 3 points..."

Chapman no, what about Brown? You go for the best. Stevens looks like going to Pies and Port fans aren't that disappointed about that.

Brown would be utterly useless - we have the best outside running brigade in the comp - Williams N Davis Kennelly O'Loughlin Goodes Schneider. He is from Sydney's point of view just more of the same.

We need strong ball winners who can win the footy and get it out, strong bodied midfielders like Cresswell at 25.

We really only have three genuine midfielder - J Bolton - Fosdike and Kirk. Either from inside our list or somewhere we need to double that at least. Especially a strong ball winner in the Burns/ Voss / Black/ Mitchell/ Coghlan/ Johnson/ Kerr etc mode.

Our clear weakness is that we are bottom of the table in the AFL in clearances - it killed us in the final qrtr - It killed us when we played Hawthorn and when we played Collingwood.

Eye candy footballers aren't going to fix it

It's a hard one - where are we going to find one (or more)?

                  From our list:
                  Mathews?
                  Ablett?
                  Schneider??
Fixter?? (probably won't ever have the body for it)
                  McGlone??? (ditto)
                  Thewlis???
                  Bevan??????

Who is worthwhile and attainable from other clubs?

The attainables (not that they're really worthwhile) are probably guys like Hulme, McGough etc.

Otherwise getting someone like J.Hunt cheap and taking a punt. Adam Fisher (Melb RL) - I don't know how he's gone this year (presumably not brilliantly), but maybe you could take a punt and try and do a Sam Mitchell with him.

Basically they're pretty rare and you either draft them early (eg. Hasleby), or punt on someone raw and do a hell of a lot of work on them (eg. Mitchell).

There was probably a time when no-one thought Kelly would have the body for it - too skinny. And possibly the same could be said for Cressa - to chubby. Both proved that with hard work over a number of years that you can develop the body. So there's probably hope yet for the likes of Fixter and McGlone.

But they won't be solving that problem for the next season, or two, you'd think.

                      Chapman is an interesting choice.

He certainly loves a goal, and can kick them at crucial times. In that regard alone he could go some way to filling the massive void left by Cressa. Only question mark would be his work ethic, but that of course could change under Roos.

Seeing as he has the same hair as Nicks (poor bugger), perhaps a straight swap would be on?

Seriously, I wounder if we shouldn't just get another tagger to 'release' Kirk? He certainly showed against Port how damaging & tough he can be when not given a specific shut-down assignment. Maybe Fixter could become our next star 'defensive midfielder' (as Kirk prefers to be called).

IMO our midfield doesn't need that much tinkering, but we could really use an imported 'gorilla-killer' down back.

We need to have a closer look inside as well as externally. Players like Licuria, who we dumped, is great at getting the ball for Collingwood and one of their key clearance players.

Someone like Paul Chapman of Geelong might be okay - very good at getting the ball around the ground. What about Joel Corey too? Adam Simpson would be pretty awesome to get.

Nick Stevens is almost certainly bound for Victoria IMHO, but he does get a lot of clearances around the ground and in the centre, and is a pretty classy footballer, so I wouldn't mind if we could get him.

It's interesting to me to see Chapman's name coming up in trade discussions.

I've thought all season that we desperately need another hard at it on-baller, and couple of weeks ago I had a look through all the lists to see what might be available.

I discounted the "big" names as options, because competing for one of them might well tear our existing list apart.

The two names that I thought we could reasonably get in a fair trade were Chapman from Geelong and Guerra from Port Power.

So, as far as I'm concerned, that makes it definite . . . Chapman's the one.

I'll just give Roosy a call now.

I find this to be a rather strange claim. Filling Cressa's spot is definitely worth consideration, but stating that the midfield isn't up to it on the basis of one quarter is a bit odd. They have after all performed admirably all year (particularly after the retirements of Kel and Schwatta).

More precisely, Goodesy needed some help in the ruck. he was thrashed by Charman in the last quarter. With no Ball and an unfit Doyle providing limited assistance, Roberts-Thompson performing a forward role in Magic's absence, Goodesy had every reason to be exhausted by the end of it.

Personally, I reckon a natural ruckman is the number one priority, particularly with Bally presumably having a limited shelf life.

I think Ablett could become a good midfielder and what about McVeigh? Bigger priorities are a FIT ruckman and a tall defender - what about Jonathon Hay, I don't think he has been re-signed.
