Not 100% convinced Notting would be worth a first round draft pick, which it seems the Brions want

Excuse my ignorance, but Notting is one of the few Brisbane players who I know nothing about. Can we get a description, please.

First round draft picks are only offered for players who are regular players in the team, ie Brown & Solomon. While Notting is not one of them he would add to our team immediately with his flexibility.

How about a second round pick and one of Warfe, Nicks or Seymour?

          2003 Goals: 3

          2003 FORM
Slowed by knee soreness again through the first half of the summer, he returned midway through the pre-season series and was explosive off the bench in the opening two premiership games of the season. Showed great dash against Essendon in Round 1 and gave his side some spark in the dour struggle against Port. Did some handy things against the Roos in Round 3.

          CAREER HISTORY
Tim Notting showed his value by playing 22 games and grabbing his second medallion despite little preparation and a painful knee condition in 2002.

One of the unqualified success stories of 2001, knee tendonitis restricted him but certainly could not keep him down in 2002. He returned late in the Wizard Cup series after only a couple of weeks of running and built his form slowly through the early part of the season.

He played the first 10 games before missing Round 11 with knee soreness, his first miss in 34 matches. Was out again the following week and had the bye week to recover as well and proved dangerous on a wing and around goal on his return, being prominent against Carlton and Melbourne.

Quieter against Richmond and Sydney, where he switched from midfield to part-time forward in the absence of Jonathan Brown and Daniel Bradshaw, he played mostly cameo roles off the bench in the following six weeks, providing midfield run and a marking target up forward when required.

He had an impact when coming off the bench in the qualifying final, picking up 14 possessions and sending the ball inside 50m on five occasions with his dashing runs and long kicks. Did a similar job in the preliminary final, and was a useful shock weapon in the grand final similar to 2001. Had 14 second half touches against Collingwood and gave his side plenty of run.

The previous year, in any other team he would have undoubtedly won the Most Improved Player Award for his transformation from battling spare parts player to damaging midfielder. Unfortunately - although Notting would probably beg to differ as the big bloke is one of his best mates - dynamic young forward star Jonathan Brown was in the same team.

But Notting?s effort in turning two 24th place finishes into seventh place in club champion voting was indicative of how far he progressed in 12 months or so. If opposing sides were struggling enough to contain the famed ?Fab Four? in the midfield, along came Notting to blow them away from left-field out on a wing.

Twice he kicked four goals in a game ? against Fremantle along with 31 touches and three Brownlow Medal votes in Round 5, and against the Roos at Colonial in Round 17 ? and he grabbed three against Geelong in Round 21 among his season tally of 25.

His ability to get the ball and run with it, then blast a 60m drop punt deep into attack created numerous scoring opportunities for his side during the year. He even had the honour of being designated as coach Leigh Matthews? shock weapon in the Grand Final.

Notting was held back on the bench until just before halftime, his fresh legs helping him to an equal quarter-high seven possessions in the game-busting third quarter. He scorched his rivals in one effort on the wing that created a third term goal, and then he had the honour of swooping on a Darryl White handpass to post the critical opening goal of the final term.

It all came after he was overlooked for selection in the Ansett Cup Grand Final and the Round 1 season opener against Port Adelaide. He was recalled in Round 2 and didn?t miss a game thereafter, impressing with his enormous athleticism, his strong marking ability, and his prodigious kick. Importantly, he closed the gap between his good games and his ordinary games.

Notting posted his 50th AFL game in the qualifying final against Port Adelaide, and averaged 17.0 possessions, 5.2 marks and 2.0 clearances for the season.

Quite appropriately, Notting hails from the home of Australia?s most famous footrace, Stawell, but he gave little indication in 2000 about what was in store the following year. He failed to capitalise on the momentum he gained at the end of 1999, when he appeared to have staked an undisputable claim for the key centre-half-forward position. After finishing ?99 with a string of outstanding performances, he struggled through the pre-season and was unable to assert himself early in 2000.

Just as he began to make an impact in Rounds 6&7, he badly dislocated a thumb and was sidelined for seven weeks. He produced an outstanding 27-possession effort in Round 18 against the Western Bulldogs, but was used in spare-parts roles around that.

Originally from Navarre, near Stawell, he is a player who didn?t boast the customary long junior representative background that most players new to the AFL have behind them these days. He was a stand-out junior performer at local level, winning three U16 B&F awards, but was surprisingly overlooked by the Ballarat Rebels early in ?96, and instead played as a 17-year-old Stawell Secondary College student with Navarre seniors in the local Lexton League. He also played under coach Jimmy Jess in the inter-league game against Maryborough-Castlemaine at Maryborough.

He received a mid-season call-up from the Rebels, and later played three games with the Richmond Reserves. Ironically, he played with the ?Tiger Twos? at the MCG in the curtain-raiser to Fitzroy?s last game in Melbourne. And a month later he was a member of the Rebels finals side that played in the MCG curtain-raiser to the Brisbane-North Melbourne preliminary final - the last game of the Bears' era.

His coach at the Richmond Reserves was Rod O?Riley, and when O?Riley joined the Brisbane Lions as Development Coach for the 1997 AFL season he strongly recommended Notting at the ?96 Draft. Accordingly, he was drafted on his athletic potential.

Working hard to build up a typically young frame, he made good, steady progress in his first 12 months in Brisbane, playing with Mt Gravatt in the QSFL competition, but sadly he missed the 1997 QSFL grand final through injury.

He was a member of the Lions side which toured South Africa for the historic Ansett Cup game against Fremantle in February 1998, and after being an early stand-out with the Lion Cubs in the QSFL he earned his first chance at AFL level against Essendon at the MCG in Round 8. He was the club?s seventh teenage debutant of the year but didn?t see a lot of game time and was relegated the following week.

Still, he took things in his stride, continued to be a consistent performer with the Cubs, and won a recall against Melbourne at the MCG in Round 18. After a further week with the Cubs he wasn?t about to let his third opportunity slip, and he finished the season in the seniors through Rounds 20-21-22.

A creditable 7th in the QSFL Grogan Medal for the competition?s best and fairest player despite his five games in the Lions side, he carried on in ?99 and was never far from senior selection. He played five of the first 18 matches and was an emergency eight times, until Champion?s untimely injury provided just the opportunity he wanted.

He kicked three goals in the 114-point demolition of Fremantle at the Gabba in round 20 and followed with six goals against Melbourne at the MCG in Round 21 ? the most by a Lions player in ?99 ? to earn a Norwich Rising Star nomination.

He had a new flatmate in 2002 in the form of Brown, with close friend Marcus Picken being traded to the Western Bulldogs over summer. An action sports freak, the Lions will no doubt ensure the prized jumping jack is a little more circumspect now when it comes to pursuits like skydiving, bungee jumping and scuba diving.

          CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

I think they'll get a first round draft pick for Notting. He would be a regular player in any other side than the Lions. When you look at some of the first round draft players running around (or not), he's reasonable value.

I hope we don't trade our 1st round pick for him. He's a good player but never going to be a topliner. As has been pointed out he has a history of knee problems.

Good luck to the Lions if they can get one for him, as long as they don't get ours!

Tendonitis isn't that bad a problem, he looks to be pretty robust apart from that. There are very few players who haven't had some injury or other, even amongst the draft players. Get him.
