I'll believe the McVeigh to Essenson deal when I see it in a Caroline Wilson article!!!!??????#######.
McVeigh asks to be traded

I think that I have made my feelings clear on McVeigh Jnr but one thing intrigues me. Sheedy has been hypercritical of Richmond for poaching players , yet it is my understanding that Essendon have pursued young McVeigh relentlessly . The irony of the situation may not have struck Sheeds as yet or he has just ignorded it for convenience sake.Last edited by SWANSBEST; 14 October 2003, 09:10 PM.WMPComment

Maybe they think he will be a superstar like they thought of Shane Harvey the brother of Brent. Essendon supporters were raving about this bloke this time last year. Now he is up for trade. Some star.Comment

i have to admit that i would have preferred that we took salopek before mcveigh in the last draft, but lets give the kid a bit of a chance to prove himself at the top level before knocking him.
i think the club and most supporters would be happy with his progress nextiyear if he shows some improvement and plays a couple of senior games, looking to become a regular player in 2005Comment

In fairness to Sheedy he was saying that Richmond were ****ing up the competition by offering good but not superstar players way above the odds contracts - basically having an inflationary effect on wages overall.
Then clubs either have to cry poor to their players and ask for pay cuts, or trade away required players, to compete with the offers clubs like Richmond make and fit all their players under the cap.
I didn't think it was merely about poaching as such.
It's also relevant that he hasn't lost hope of bringing Solomon back - hence his negative Richmond comments and those about Solomon being pilloried by his (potentially) new Richmond team-mates for forcing pay cuts on them etc etc.
On McVeigh it's a bit harsh to criticise his lack of physical development at this point in time - we drafted him as a 17 y/o (only turned 18 in April) and he missed all last year with a shoulder injury (ie. no chance to do any significant upper body work).
I know just looking through the lists and throwing up names doesn't mean much, but he's not significantly lighter than the likes of X.Clarke, Reynolds, Greene, Wells etc who are young players who have managed to play multiple games of senior footy.
Who knows with young players but I'd imagine he'll easily play 100 games.Comment

That suggests you're rating Solomon as a top 5 pick plus another. He's a decent enough player but not one that fills Sydney's most pressing needs - more of a third/fourth backman or flanker than a true KPP and we seem to have a few of those in the team and coming through the ranks.
And I agree with the post above - certainly not at $400k.Comment

Much ado about nothing.
If Leo Barry was seen driving down the Hume Highway to visit his parents atm the media would declare "Leo Barry has left Sydney and looks set to join Collingwood"
It's why these things are best ignored.
Both the McVeigh's said in the media (go to their player pages at AFL.com) that Jared desired to stay and play in Sydney and play for the Swans - not S&Don - would be no reason to suggest that would have changed.
Mark did as was reported speak to Sydney - but we can presume they told him there would not be many opportunities.
S&Don really don't have any tradeable commodities anyway.
Way too early to declare on McVeigh - but nothing going on hereYou don't ban those who supported your opponent, you make them wallow in their loserdom by covering your victory! You sit them in the front row. You give them a hat! Toby ZieglerComment

Of course at the moment there is not a lot of proof that McVeigh even wants to go to Essendon, except for the fact that he was on the Essendon end of season trip. He could have just wanted to take a trip with his brother, and the only way possible was through the Essendon trip. Also, even though I am not a huge fan of McVeigh, we should keep him until his contract expires. He's only eighteen and has only been in Sydney for a year.Sydney Swans Premiers 2005 - The Mighty BloodsComment

If all the news said was that he went on the Bombers end of season trip then Big Deal !!! He is very close to his brother so it's not such a big shock that he went away with him.
Did the Swans have an 'official' team end of season trip? I know of a few that have all headed in different directions so maybe nothing was organised and his brother asked him to make up numbers ...
It's not an impossible scenario of him asking to be traded especially because of Mark and the fact that he knows most of the team quite well but I wouldn't read anything into it until he said so himself .He who laughs last thinks slowestComment
