Now I'm confused NMWBloods.

As I say, there is definitely a spot for a tall backman, but Stevens most likely is not that man.

I agree 100% with that statement. We certainly could do with another tall backman and Stevens is not likely to be the man.

That's why he was traded.

Either he was seen as surplus to needs, which I agree with, so let's get SOMETHING for him or in fact he was keen/happy to move to the club he supported as a kid.

Sorry - I wasn't clear in my first response to you. I didn't necessarily disagree with your scenario, just with the assertion that their wasn't a spot available at the moment. There is definitely a spot now for someone of Stevens' size, it's just that Roos didn't think he was the guy.

I'd be interested to know if the conversation did go that way or whether Stevens didn't want to go yet. Would love to know Roos' thoughts on him. If he didn't want to go, then I think we should have kept him. If he did, then that's fine.

Yeah - he was rather frustrating like that.

You could take the 'things could've changed if we'd persevered and committed to playing him forward/back for 22 games next year' view, but in reality he was too far down the pecking order in either position for that to be feasible.

So I assume we are looking at Hunt and Powell as they reasonably tall defenders who will move up to eventually fill the spot he might have been able to graft in defence.

Good luck to him at Adelaide, but I reckon he could easily become another Fitzgerald or Schell for them.

Obviously don't wish any injuries on him a la Fitzy - not really what I meant.

Adelaide have looked to trading to solve their key forward problems - Carey, Fitzgerald, Schell, Hewitt, M.Stevens, Welsh - none of which have solved their problems.

Now Scott Stevens - like the others he has talent and in theory it could work - but personally I can't see him blossoming under Gary Ayres.

When you add McGregor and Perrie he's going to have to show a fair bit to get extended opportunities.

The Salary Capthing is a bit puzzling - saw Scott on 'TRading Places' he said that it was mutually agreed he should move on.

I tend to think he should move on.

If that is the case why hadn't they pulled some forward to this year when Sydney was apparently way under the cap?

Or is it a budgetry thing?

Excuse my ignorance, but who is Brian Waldron? Is he anyone we should believe?

I struggle to comprehend how we could be anywhere close to the salary cap - as has already been discussed in other threads - but budgetary constraints would make sense giving our recently publicised financial woes.

If true I'd imagine it's a combination of a few factors:

• paying out Warfe and Seymour whilst also having to pay for their replacements on the list
• conservatism towards the '10% loading' allowance changes and how it might affect our TPP
• a desire to leave some space for the next few years when (hopefully) we have a bunch of rising young players coming out of contract (ie. trading for an established player and giving them a 3 year deal could create a squeeze down the track)
• adhering to a budgeted figure dictated by the bean counters

Interesting to see how St Kilda handle it in a couple of years when the likes of Riewoldt, Koschitze, Hayes, Ball, Clarke, Dal Santo etc etc all want an increased slice of the pie. They won't be helped by having to add an extra 3 (I think its 3) players to their list this year, with the new minimum of 37 players.

If that list of theirs is going to win premierships, it better be in the next 3-4 years.

And I still cant see why we'd have salary cap problems. Last year, Kel, Dunks and Schwatter retired, and this year Cressa as well. Surely these guys would have been earning big amounts and thus freed up alot of money when they retired.

I might be wrong, but I really dont see where all the money is going, unless Goodesy, Micky and Saddo have had massive pay rises earlier this year..?

Actually, I vaguely recall it being reported that Mick took a pay cut in return for an extra year on his contract.

Goodes was already on about $400,000 - can't imagine it could have gone up THAT much. Saddo I wouldn't know about, but I'd be seriously surprised if he were earning more than $300,000.

Signing Goodes early this year rather than waiting until the end of the season was probably the best masterstroke of the year from the Swans. Though hopefully he has incentive elements built in...

I gather than Roosy stuck to the line that he wasn't going to recruit mediocre players - and the whole football community has interpreted it as salary cap related

Just another one of those beautifully accurate rumours that surround Sydney.
