You've made yourself known on this issue, but the way you go on its like Mase has committed a crime. Weather McVeigh becomes any good lets wait and see, I think he has talent and should do well for the club, but wait until he becomes a superstar before attacking Mase and Mase wait until he fails before piping up on this issue.

For me I didn't rate him last year and I was against picking up because I felt we had greater midfield needs long term (we needed a inside midfielder), which everyone at the time said was crap and that we had enough and what we lacked was running midfielders, yet 12 months down the line we find ourselves lacking inside midfielders and we have plenty of outside midfielders.

Why I didn't rate him was because I hadn't seen him play (and before anyone asks, yes I know he missed and entire season in 2002). Having said that I was never doubting his abilty to play the game, just weather he was worth Pick 7 (which became Pick 5)

Well enough of the McVeigh bashing, the one to watch is another Pennant Hills Boy. Nick Potter has the determination, skills and size to be a good AFL player. I think the swans will get him with one of thier lower picks. This kid is one of the fittest and in his one day at draft camp, was in the top 5 in the beep test.

He will get under the radar of the other clubs due to NSW/ACT not being apart of the national competition but sydney has been very loyal to good NSW/ACT talent since letting two other NSW/ACT pass them by (Mark McVeigh and Lenny Hayes who are also Pennant Hills Players).

They have learnt their lession and should let it happen again and thats why they took Jarrod McVeigh. Just look at some of the raw talent to come out of the Rams over the past 5 years. When that talent is placed under some good coaching, the results are coming along well and the swans are capitalising on it.

This is basically what I have said. I didn't think he was worth a high pick, especially considering he missed all of 2002 with injuries.

After seeing him play, I don't think much has change and still do not believe he was worth that high of a pick, I am happy to be proven wrong by Mcveigh, I just don't think he will be the star he has been touted to be.

Someone else asked who I rated higher. I can only remember Mcveigh because he was the one rated so highly by everyone, and other names are quite hard to remember.
There was a guy who had a name starting with D .. Dumbrell ? Not sure, but everyone I knew rated this guy higher than Mcveigh at the time, he just didn't have the name to go with him.

No one else that I know of got recruited from that team, although I could be wrong. I rated Bevan higher aswell IIRC.

BTW Steve, I am basing my comments on Sydney Under 16 rep games, TAC Cup games AND Swans Reserves games. And as a player I have no seen much change in the way he plays in that time, and therefore I won't change my comments regarding him.

I think Mcveigh will probably make it, BUT IN MY OPINION HE WILL BE NO STAR.

That is what I think. I don't think he is a hack, I don't think he isn't going to make it. I DONT THINK HE WILL LIVE UP TO BEING PICK SO HIGH IN THE DRAFT!

I won't go on and on about it, but Mase, from your last couple of posts I think you're just placing way too much emphasis on the No.5 pick being somewhat of a star player guarantee.

Just looking at the 7 drafts prior to last year, No.5 picks:

95 - Krummel
96 - McAlister
97 - Power
98 - M.Stevens
99 - L.Brown
00 - McDougall
01 - Clarke

Krummel and McAlister are finished, and other than Power I think you could mount your 'I'm not saying he won't make it but IMO he won't be a STAR' case against all the others.

But that's just nitpicking.

Let's face it, it was always going to be McVeigh vs Salopek vs Schammer - it will be very interesting to see whether Salopek is still in Adelaide at this time next year (and if/when he's not whether anyone recognises that perhaps a wise decision was made).

At this time of year you get people throwing names in the air of players they know or have seen once or twice, and people just see it in print (albeit in places like BigFooty) and run with it.

IIRC there were a lot of people nominating guys like Treeby and Dinnell (probably the guy you were talking about) as 'certainties' just on the basis of having seen them play before.

Where it becomes farcical is when comparisons are then made with players they HAVEN'T seen play.

At the end of the day Ricky Barham's job security is directly linked to the players he drafts - I somehow doubt he'd take the McVeigh decision lightly and recruit him without damn good reason.

Never did I say I had an opinion on McVeigh this time last year.

How could I, I had never seen him play. I am happy to just let the recruiting people judge the players.

I would think they would be better judges of talent then me and hopefully better judges then some people on this board who are happy to offer 'informed' opinions of players worth, even though they hadn't seen them play, EVER.

This is obviously not the case with Mase, he HAD seen him play and voiced an opinion, although I point out I took him to task for his relentless 12 month campign against McVeigh, not for the opinion itself.

As for now though, having seen McVeigh play ALL the curtain-raiser reserves games + one game in Canberra I am in a position to give my opinion that his skills are very good, his clean hands extra good and he could very easily become a major player for the Swans in the years to come. However, if you are expecting him to be breaking through packs and bruising oponents in season 2004, you will be disappointed.

Mase stated that will be all, Steve is not going to go on about it and I rest my case also.

Again .. I am not placing emphasis on that number 5 pick. I am concerned maybe the expectations on Mcveigh will be let down, as some believe he will be a star.

You helped my point showing a lot of those 5th picks were duds, and that could certainly be the case again (not saying it will).

I just don't think he will be the star some say he will be, and I believe we could have used that pick more wisely!

In the end I am very happy to be proven wrong and I really don't want to have wasted a top 5 pick. Some come on McVeigh, be the star some believe you can be

i hope that Nick Potter does come to sydney it would be a bonus if his bro Tim could come along to Nick is a great player for the pennant hills demons ill try and ring Tim to find out whats happening i think Nick loves playing for the dees so im not sure what will happen but i think the melbourne demons might of spoken to him but ill find out for you
