    Great Swans Hopes

Look we really shouldn't expect anything from the players drafted this year, Josh Willoughby, Andrew Ericken, Tim Schmidt & Matthew Davis will certainly not make any impact this year.

I saw a lot of the reserves games last year and my top 10 Great Hopes for 2004 are . . .

    #1
Ben Fixter was last years best first year player and this years most frequently injured (a massive case of second year blues) he is however, really good!

    #2
Luke Ablett, last year he looked too good for the seconds and played like he thought so too. The two finals he played last year should be the making of him.

    #3
Jarrad McVeigh was last years #4 draft choice ~ so he must be good, right?

    #4
Stephen Doyle, constantly injured but with half a slice of luck this guy could be very usefull ~ but how lucky is he.

    #5
Mark Powell ~ he went for some brilliant spekkies in his handfull of first grade games last year. If he's spent enough time in the gym he should make it.

    #6
Jarrad Sundqvist I'm not sure about he looks to be between positions, he?s very tall for a runner but not big enough for a key position.

    #7
Heath James, it's a pity he did so many hamstrings because his dad was one of the best high leeping forwards I ever saw.

    #8
Nick Malceski (like Bevan) did well in the reserves.

    #9
Sean Dempster looked ok in the reserves although he was manhandled a little by some of the monsters in the ACTFL.

    #10
Paul Bevan, a total smoky because as a rookie list player he can't play in the firsts but he was standout for the reserves in the second half of 2003.

    Ruckman,

What about Thewlis, wasn't he in great form in the reserves until he hurt himself mid year and did not re appear?

Don't get to see any reserves games since I live in Melbourne.

Yep, put Thewlis on that list, I'm really looking forward to see him play at AFL level.

      Good call DST.
Before you criticize a man, walk a mile in his shoes. That way you'll be a mile away and he'll be shoeless.

Actually I didn't put Thewlis in my top #10, because I had to choose 10 and he reminds me of Dean McRae.

Nor did I put Meiklejohn nor Buchanan.

If Josh keeps going the way he did this year, it wont be long before we see him as a regular in the seniors.

He's a strong guy and tough. He just needs to work on his timing. He was good down back, but also proved handy forward.

At 19 He's around the same build as B2, giving a couple a kilo's away at the moment. Hopefully over the next couple of years, he will bulk up a little more and be a very solid backman.

Since you saw alot of reserve games this year, you must ve seen a bit of MciV.
Can you give me a little bit more info on his progress ? I mean I know he was the 4th pick, but what does he look like ? how does he go ??
What are his short commings and have you seen any improvment in him so far ?
What are your greatest expectations of him ?
And yes this is twenty questions, see I want to live vickariously ( I think everyone here knows by now that I can't spell - sorry about that, but it's true.) through your experience!

McVeigh junior is skinny and had a load of blode hair that made him stick out and he's skinny. I forsee a lot of gym time in his future.

I don't think he'll ever be a high posession winning "inside onballer" he tends to drift around packs ~ and seemed to be a little underinvolved at times. Although I did see him lay one ripping tackle at Telstra.

He's a good long kick with both feet, he does not appear to possess enormous pace but seems to cover the ground well.

He reminds me a little of Wayne Schwass or Mark Browning.

                      Fixter second year blues?????

Hardly, he has been around a few years now but has only had one, almost injury free season, and that was very good.
This time last year we were saying he was as good as a top draft pick, as what he had played was very good.

Lets hope he "is" that player who adds that little bit extra in the midfield that we need.

I may be wrong, but from what I saw, he looked a lot bigger than B2, but Craig would carve him in the gym. The bloke is 3rd strongest in the club, behind Baz and Ball

McVeigh is a really clean ball winner - really great at getting the ball off the deck.

Agree he doesn't look super quick but ok. Looked pretty skinny in the ACTAFL that I saw - would suggest if he plays seniors this year he would come off the bench a lot, couldn't see him competing with AFL level players.

Will take a couple of years

....now we also have D1 and D2 (and nearly H1 and H2, though H2 would have stopped D2)
