Heat concern for Swans v Carlton

Heat a concern for Roos, Pagan

When Sydney and Carlton line-up in round one of the Wizard Homes Loans Cup on Sunday at Telstra Stadium they will be expecting plenty of heat.

Sydney coach Paul Roos is concerned that the weather forecast for game day is for 38-degrees on the coast, and at Tuesday?s joint media conference at the SCG, Roos warned Carlton coach Denis Pagan to expect at least three degrees higher at Homebush.

?To a certain degree you are expecting it to be hot at this time of year, but you do have to be mindful,? Roos said.

?You?d like to get two extra interchanges. I don?t know what the exact ruling is, but I know the guys playing in Darwin get an extra couple.

?The primary concern is the players? health and well-being, particularly at this stage of the year. You wouldn?t want to lose anyone for a couple weeks just because of the heat.?

Pagan agreed that the forecast was not ideal.

?I am sure the AFL will be mindful of that and maybe we have probably got to look at that a little bit closer and get a more accurate weather forecast (closer to the time),? Pagan said.

Pagan conceded that the Blues? busy off-season recruiting drive - 15 arrivals and 16 departures - has so far provided more questions than answers, but he hopes the picture will become a little clearer with most expected to take the field on Sunday.

?We had to do something (as) we didn?t have any first and second round choices or priority picks for a couple of years now and probably missed out on five really good picks,? Pagan said.

?We really didn?t have any choice after winning three games the year before last and four last year. We had to do something.

?We tried to be bold, we tried to be aggressive with it and it has created problems in terms of completely different personnel that you don?t know one hundred percent about in terms of what they are going to do under pressure and how are they going to perform.

?The only way we are going to find that out is to get against good quality opposition, and we will know a little bit more about our group come Sunday afternoon.

?(The players are fit) apart from one. Our guys have had a quality preparation and we are pretty pleased about that.

?There is a fair chance a high percentage (of the new recruits) will play. We have got two sessions to get through yet and still have got a bit of work to do.?

Roos confirmed captain Stuart Maxfield, Barry Hall and Brett Kirk will play.

With Hall, Maxfield and Kirk to be included, maybe Roos is hopeful of winning and progressing a bit further, which may help in slowly introducing some of the quality players to genuine opposition.

How is it possible that a competitive game was scheduled on a February Afternoon in western Sydney????????

Isn't this a night comp anyway? What the hell's going on. You really have to winder at the actual intelligence of some people at the AFL.

Without knowing the answer, my guess is that it's a cost saving exercise, y'know not having to turn on the stadium lights, pay stadium staff o'time etc. At least that's what I winder.

Nothing to do with that, all to do with TV coverage.

Our game will be the second game in the Foxtel double header shown into Meldouble on Sunday.

I'm sure you're right but do you mean to tell me that Melbournites spend sunny Sunday afternoons watching 6 hours of preseason football on TV?

Yep, don't you know that there's nothing to do in Melb?

                  No, it's a pre-season comp. Hasn't been a night comp for years.

There's a poll on the Swans website asking whether Roosy should try and win the Wiz Cup or blood the youngsters. When I checked it was 80% in favour of blooding. I'd tend to agree and I'm sure Roosy is looking long term.

38C on the coast!!!! Bloody hell. Anyone going out to the game? It's definitely a few degrees hotter at Homebush.....I was out there for the Sydney Festival,

No, but Foxtel needs to fill it's tv schedule somehow and they fork out over $10,000,000 a year for the rights.

They have repeatedly asked the AFL and the other channels in the consortium to be allowed to televise a late finishing double header on a Sunday.

This scheduling is a bit of a dry run to see if they are happy with the results.

                            $35m a year - it's losing about $10m a year. It's bleeding very badly!!

Of course mate. Will be there with bells on. May even wear a big sombrero to give me some all over protection. In lieu of many people leaving the Cheer Squad area on Saturday due to the heat, it may be a suggestion to maybe have the Cheer Squad up in that stand behind the goals. Several of the kids were physically sick at North Sydney.

Considering I'll be at the Pigs-Kings basketball derby all of 18 hours beforehand, I may as well set up camp on the grass in front of the stadium overnight. And have a quick dip in the fountain near the Novotel.

By the way, I assumed our memberships covered entry to this match. Considering it is nearly Wednesday and nothing has happened as regards our memberships, I assume I'll be paying again on Sunday.
