When Sydney and Carlton line-up in round one of the Wizard Homes Loans Cup on Sunday at Telstra Stadium they will be expecting plenty of heat.
Sydney coach Paul Roos is concerned that the weather forecast for game day is for 38-degrees on the coast, and at Tuesday?s joint media conference at the SCG, Roos warned Carlton coach Denis Pagan to expect at least three degrees higher at Homebush.
?To a certain degree you are expecting it to be hot at this time of year, but you do have to be mindful,? Roos said.
?You?d like to get two extra interchanges. I don?t know what the exact ruling is, but I know the guys playing in Darwin get an extra couple.
?The primary concern is the players? health and well-being, particularly at this stage of the year. You wouldn?t want to lose anyone for a couple weeks just because of the heat.?
Pagan agreed that the forecast was not ideal.
?I am sure the AFL will be mindful of that and maybe we have probably got to look at that a little bit closer and get a more accurate weather forecast (closer to the time),? Pagan said.
Pagan conceded that the Blues? busy off-season recruiting drive - 15 arrivals and 16 departures - has so far provided more questions than answers, but he hopes the picture will become a little clearer with most expected to take the field on Sunday.
?We had to do something (as) we didn?t have any first and second round choices or priority picks for a couple of years now and probably missed out on five really good picks,? Pagan said.
?We really didn?t have any choice after winning three games the year before last and four last year. We had to do something.
?We tried to be bold, we tried to be aggressive with it and it has created problems in terms of completely different personnel that you don?t know one hundred percent about in terms of what they are going to do under pressure and how are they going to perform.
?The only way we are going to find that out is to get against good quality opposition, and we will know a little bit more about our group come Sunday afternoon.
?(The players are fit) apart from one. Our guys have had a quality preparation and we are pretty pleased about that.
?There is a fair chance a high percentage (of the new recruits) will play. We have got two sessions to get through yet and still have got a bit of work to do.?
Roos confirmed captain Stuart Maxfield, Barry Hall and Brett Kirk will play.
