Roos bad coaching?

I have been thinking about this since our embarrising defeat by Carlton, does anyone alse consider this as Roos first bit of bad coaching. Having had 20 years experience in football, some of it as a coach (admittedly not at AFL Level), I find it hard to believe that a coach would throw his young players into the deep end the way he did. He must of known that Carlton would be at full strength, and to play so many young untried players against experienced AFL players would only lower their confidence without the help of some experienced players around them. I think the only thing he has achieved from the weekend is making our up and comers look very ordinary. I know we had some players unavailable due to injuries, but surely he could of played some of the guys who just decided to sit out for at least the first half to help the young ones settle in and gain a bit of confidence.

To me it looked like a melting pot of a match plan. Players told, "you're on him, do your best".

I was confused completely about the match ups. Kirky seemed to have Stevens and Camporeale??

The young fellas just had free reign and zero accountability!

I think a more gradual approach as the quarter progressed so the mix of youth and experience would have been more helpful. The young fellas should have had the last 10 minutes of a quarter and not the other way around.

It turned into a farce when you think about it.

It just looked like a bit of an all out experiment, with the positions completely and totally mixed up as well. I would have thought that Roos would have played the game a bit more normal season like to see how some of his younger players that could possibly get a game in the seniors stand up in a half-normal environment. There was nothing normal about that match, or the way that Roos coached, and therefore we were hammered.

Nothing wrong with the young blokes experiencing a flogging. They'll either put up or drop out.

I thought the coaching staff seemed to be having no effect on the game (eg. not changing bad match ups). Maybe it was the stupid pre-season restrictions on the runner.

Penga, do our coaching staff think that they're so good they can get away without practice themselves?

Coaches who did not play senior players and who did not prioritise winning, found themselves unable to do anything really.

With the interchange restrictions, there was no ability to move the chess pieces. Not a great strategy from those coaches (Mick and Roosy) to just ignore that and dump the rookies in the deep end. The AFL introduced the rule to discourage coaches from "over-coaching".

Although we wanted to blood the youth, this wasn't the forum to do so.

We are better off out of the Wizard and playing games like this weekend's against the Pies. Practice some real matches.

If you do what your coach tells you and you get beaten by over 100 points, does that reinforce their plan in your young mind or plant the seed of doubt?

So why was Schauble kept on Fevola (he was in the vicinity every time Fevola took a mark)? Seems like about the worst match up we had. That was a match up that should have been changed.

Who reaches the highest level of their sport without having a competitive spirit and wanting to beat their opponent? I understand playing young players and keeping some of the seniors out of the game, that's great, but do your best to help the poor buggers win.

Pathetic response.

The thread has nothing to do about winning or losing, but whether Roos had erred in dropping the young guys in at the deep end. Now correct me if I am wrong, but hasn't Roos now stated that our younger players are not as good as he expected. Surely if they had some experience around them they would of performed better. You don't have to be a genius to work out that if you put in a team of 17, 18 and 19 year olds against a team of experienced AFL players they are going to get towelled up. They need quality around them to show their true worth, and then if they can't perform, you have a reason to critisice them.

How obvious, I should of known, we have now got around 15 Adam Goodes' in our squad, with a list like that, we are a shoe in for the next 10 Brownlows.

Only flaw I see that with that logic is, we had plenty of kids match up, but I don't think Carlton have that many champions.

all this whinging and whining... schauble wasnt on fevola for 4 quarters... and that isnt a matchup that would normally occur, schauble would normally be on whitnall, therefore the coaches were experimenting here too

the rookies will be introduced like u say with experience around them, WHEN IT COUNTS, in the season proper...

With hindsight, it was a mistake leaving out Williams and Bolton. Having those two would have enabled Roos to replicate, to a certain extent, our gameplan, with C-Bolt and Maxi in the role usually played by Kennelly and Barry, running out of defens (didn't realise until Sunday just how important those two are). Having Bolton and Williams would have offered leadership to the midfield, and McVeigh, Bevan, Buchanan etc would have been better able to show what they had, in a role somewhat similar to that which they'd play in the H & A season.

However, we did not have the luxury of hindsight last week. Bad coaching? I think saying that these kids "aren't good enough to play at this level" is worse coaching. What the hell does that achieve, Roosy?
